Calling all Belfast and Bangor Belles
Having just recently moved back to Northern Ireland, I'm finding it a bit of a dead-end finding Burlesque themed shenenigans in the locality. It seems that no-one is really into the scene apart from the odd themed night.
I'm not especially hugely burly experienced but my move back to the mothership has made me realise that I'd love to at least get involved in something that way inclined. If anyone has any pointers on anything planned over the next few months I'd be very appreciative. My corset and accompanying fabulous accessories are dying for an outing, they're practically can-canning out of my wardrobe.
Please take pity on them...

Hi Floozy,
I'm from Belfast myself (live in Edinburgh) and I know what you mean. The live music scene in Belfast is awesome but there isn't any real cabaret scene. As far as I'm aware there's a pretty good gay scene in the cathedral quarter and maybe the clubs there would be good to talk to. You could ask the Kremlin if you could perform an act as a short feature (if it's still going - I'm a little out of touch). You don't have to be part of a full on burlesque 'night'. Just see how it goes. If others see you and like what you do then maybe a scene will sprout, because they'll be inspired to do it too. That would be great, if that happened.
As for real burlesque nights in Belfast I did The Bedlam Ballroom in The Black Box in Belfast a little while ago and it was great. It will be back in February. I think they're hoping to make that a more regular event. Tadhg, the guy that runs it, wants it to be every bit as good as the well known burlesque events around the country and so he asks established performers to do it. If you are experienced and established locally it would be good for you because it would be one less person for him to transport from England or Scotland or Wales.
Belfast really needs a good burlesque night.

Thanks Layla
I'll bear that in mind. I've never done burlesque before as a performer but maybe this is the impetus I need to give it a go. I'll need a few more hours shimmying in front of the bedroom mirror though in the meantime...

Yes, if you are interested in performing (sorry, I just assumed you were, got ahead of myself again) get one routine together, do it to death, video yourself and practice until you could do it backwards. Then explode into your first performance with confidence and a huge smile and blow them away. Then people will want more and hopefully a scene will emerge. Oh that would be so good for the city!
If performing turns out to be something you really weren't aiming for then there is the Bedlam Ballroom, but someone needs to do something else. One show won't be enough. Maybe see you at The Black Box in February.

Aw thanks for the advice. I've always suspected an inner burlesque diva but not really had the balls to pursue it. I think I might take your advice, have a go in front of the mirror and then think about it seriously. The thing I like about the scene is that it pays to have curves and I've certainly got a lot of those. I may as well get a-tasselling while I can. I'll keep you updated on my progress. After all, Belfast does need a bit of a shake (or should that be shimmy?) up.

It is The Bedlam Ballroom's Valentine's Burlesque show on Valentine's Day.
I'm set to perform, along with a few others. Do come along and say hello!
Love Leyla. x

Fantastic! I'll definitely be there. Thank god for a scene beyond fake tans, tits and WAG wannabes. Hopefully people will be taking note.

Belfast Burlesque
Hi Floozy,
I live in Belfast and have been to a few burlesque workshops which are held in the Yatch Club in hollywood, my bellydance teacher takes them. If you are interested I can send you a link to her web page.
Have you been able to find out anything for the Valentine Burlesque show in the Black Box. I tried to find more info on their site but this isn't even listed as an event.
Look forward to hearing if you have found out anything.
Bye for now
