Learning Circus Skills in Scotland
I was just wondering if there was anywhere in Glasgow or Edinburgh where you can learn circus skills (poi, fire, aerial, anything fun really)? Searching on the internet everything seems to be down in England and my meagre budget doesn't strech that far! I saw in 'The List' that there was a summer workshop in Glasgow that looked fantastic but I was too late to take the time off work.
If anyone has any advice I'd be really grateful - have got to the point where all my acts are striptease-based which is fun but I'd like to expand a bit.
Thanks

Hi there,
I would recommend that Scottish based performers interested in circus skills check out Rhymes with Purple at Rhymes with Purple Productions - Theatre, Cabaret, Burlesque -. They did a fire workshop in Glasgow during the summer and I reckon they are the folk to contact.

There's also Te Pooka in Edinburgh who do a lot of different things, and in Glasgow for aerial there's Spinal Chord. Google should find them for you.

The Out of the Blue Drill Hall in Edinburgh where we had the Gypsy's Tramps & Thieves night does regular aerial workshops and more occasional circus skills workshops. Their website isn't always kept up to date but if you go to ootb :: Out of the Blue and click on the "Samizdat autumn 2008" link under the photo on the right, that will have details of what's currently on.

Thanks Usherette - I just had a look at their upcoming classes, the weekend workshop looks fabulous (plus I've always been one to play with fire).
So much Burlesque, so little time!

Hey y'all,
Thanks for the shout-out Gypsy, you wonderful wumman!
We do indeed run intensive fire-performance workshops for beginners that follow through to advanced; they cover the basic skills, fire safety, building your own equipment and how to use the various large props.
Our next beginners session will take place some time in the next few months - for regular updates then please bookmark our website - Rhymes with Purple Productions - Theatre, Cabaret, Burlesque -
We are looking into running Classic Circus for Fun and Acting Without Fear as we move into Spring 2009 so, again, keep checking the website.
Ciao
x Luci
