Dusty Limits - Edinburgh Festival, 23rd Aug
THE PICTURE OF DUSTY LIMITSThe Famous SpiegeltentMonday 23rd August7pmTickets: £15/12(Tickets available at Spiegeltent Box Office or online at www.spiegeltent.net)THE PICTURE OF DUSTY LIMITSCabaret star and Fringe habitué Dusty Limits drags the skeletons from his closet and drinks them under the table in a one-man tour-de-force inspired by the twin spirits of Decadence and Disillusion. The Picture of Dusty Limits is by turns hilarious, moving and provocative, featuring such original songs as 'I Am A Jolly Self-Harmer', 'The Clash of Civilisations' and 'One Empty Bottle', as well as twisted takes on classics by Weill, Sondheim, Waits and more, all served up with Dusty's trademark mordant wit and his pointed observations about love, life, politics and addiction.First performed in a sell-our season at London's legendary Soho Revue Bar, the show has been revamped for its Edinburgh debut. Musical direction by Michael Roulston.DUSTY LIMITSDusty Limits is one of the most celebrated performers on the UK's 'new cabaret' scene. He made his European debut in 1999 and since then has graced stages and been escorted from bars from London to New York, Dublin to Berlin, and throughout the British Isles, surprising audiences with his three-octave vocal range and quirky song choices. He has appeared on some of the greatest cabaret stages in the world, from Don't Tell Mama and Joe's Pub in New York to the Roundhouse and the Café de Paris in London, and even hosted his own venue at the Glastonbury Festival (2007's The Black Poppy at Trash City).Dusty has shared the bill with some of the major names in cabaret, including Camille O'Sullivan, Amanda Palmer, Meow Meow, Miss Behave, Empress Stah, Jonny Woo, Taylor Mac, Lucifire, Immodesty Blaize and Holly Penfield. For two years he curated KUNST, an evening dedicated to new cabaret, which featured such rising stars as Frisky and Mannish, Bourgeois and Maurice, and Dickie Beau.He has hosted numerous Bongo Club Cabarets, appeared in adult pantomimes, and recently wrote and performed in two seasons of Lush Life, a satirical cabaret in the Private Eye Dining Room. He is the resident host of Boom Boom Club, a weekly cabaret at London’s most stylish new bar, the Bath House, which has featured in press worldwide. He has been interviewed numerous times by the media, including Newsweek magazine (alongside Ute Lemper and Michael Feinstein) for his thoughts on the cabaret revival, and most recently featured in a Radio 2 series on the history of cabaret. As well as performing throughout the year, he teaches at the Central School of Speech and Drama.Dusty is delighted to be returning to his spiritual home, the Edinburgh Fringe, which he has haunted for many years without showing any external signs of ageing.PRESS
Here's what The Skinny's Gareth K Vile had to say about the show:
'The Picture of Dusty Limits leaps between the two extremes of Brecht's political engagement and Wilde's more decadent rebellion with astounding ease. From capturing his drunken excesses to sudden sharp political satire, Dusty reminds his audience that cabaret and burlesque are rooted in the counter-cultural. (Suite 101)'and some general press on Mr Limits:'The remarkable Dusty Limits – beautiful to behold, with West-End worthy vocal chords.' (The Scotsman)'Scandalously witty.' (The Scotsman)'One of the form's very best.' (Time Out)'If Weimar cabaret could walk and talk, we'd be calling it Dusty Limits.' (Time Out)'A flawless performer who is consistently entertaining.' (ThreeWeeks)'In a realm of his own.' (ThreeWeeks)'Some of the finest vocals I have ever heard.' (Cabaret Hotline)'A boundlessly charismatic performer.' (The Skinny)'The compere without compare.' (The Stage)'Dusty Limits is fantastic, like a kind of dark, dirty, louche angel.' (Martyn Jaques, The Tiger Lillies)'A superior, singular artist.' (Steve Ross)'Dusty Limits broke my heart.' (Julie Christie)‘A compelling performance which leaves you feeling ever so slightly violated. In a good way.’ ThreeWeeksMonday 23rd August7pmThe Famous SpiegeltentGeorge Square GardensBOOKING INFORMATIONEdinburgh EH8 9JU
