Unintentional plaguerising
I've been thinking last night of songs to do for my NYE fetish club gig, and was drawing a blank. Then popped into my ahead a dirty version of 'my favourite things' full of naughty fetish things. There was this niggling in the back of my mind that this was really obvious so someone must have already done it.
Then this morning (mid school run) it hit me. Rosie Lugosi! I've seen her perform twice now but not for quite a while, so i think my brain just stored it somewhere in the mess at the back then brought it back up as a good idea of its own. Naughty brain!
I know Fleur had a similar thing recently she was quite upset about as it was entirely unintentional. Anyone else?
As for myself I'm quite stuck really, as I still think the number would go down very well at the club and the vast majority are unlikely to have seen much burlesque before, let alone Rosie. It wouldn't be the same words obviously as I'd be writing them myself. I wouldn't intend to perform it elsewhere. And I'm thinking its that obvious that Rosie can't have been the first either
Thoughts? Or other inspiration so I can move onto something else?

Hi honey
maybe to make yourself feel okay about all this maybe drop Rosie a line, saying what you have just said here. I have only worked with her once but she is a really lovely woman and I think she would understand. Rather than have someone else not really hear the different words of your song and tell her you were ripping her off. It can be really upsetting when that happens. I have not had anyone try and rip me off thank goodness. Had a bit of a mix up over one of my acts but got in touch with Kittie and she sorted the confusion out. We are artists and we get very passionate about are work, so I think if you talk to her it will stop any chance of unpleasantness.
Good luck

This is a little off-topic, but might be worth me mentioning...
I've twice spotted performers using very similar themes and imagery to acts of mine. And a quick spot of research confirmed that they'd started performing them after me.
In both instances I've just given a polite acknowledgement of the similarity. I realise that original ideas are very difficult to come-by, so it may be that the theme-overlap was unintentional.
On the other hand, there have been two instances in which I've realised that I've used the same themes as performers already out there, namely Miss Cherry Contrary (lollipops) and Princess Anna Arachnid aka Bunny Warren (spider). I dropped both performers a line explaining the situation(s) as soon as I realised. Cherry was really easy going and super-friendly - if I remember rightly, she said that we performed in different circles, so it wasn't an issue as far as she was concerned. Bunny was also really lovely, writing me a detailed response and putting my mind at rest by saying it seemed that we both did different things with the spider theme.

Ooh not off topic at all, thank you
I've mailed Rosie, don't think I explained myself very well and now feel daft that I should have left it and found something else. Oh well, its sent now so shall see what she says

Ooh I have a reply. She was really supportive and happy for me to do the song. And quite surprised I'd mailed to even ask, and said she's sure there's many who wouldn't
I'm so much happier about this now, so let it be a lesson to anyone in a similar situation in the future to remember we're all human
Oooh I'm off to think of naughty lyrics now....yay!

Hi honey
I new it would put your mind at rest she is lovely and I am sure she appreciated it. I always try and tell people if I am working on something that it has a similar thread just incase. I have also had to dump projects mid production if I have not none someone was doing it and it was to close, annoying but it has to be done. Good luck with your act.

As everyone has said, it's very difficult to come up with entirely new themes and songs. For example, the spider theme can be traced back to the original era of burlesque (my brain is fuddled right now and I can't remember exactly when!) but as long as people have a new take on an idea and it is different enough from any others out there, it should be ok.
I've had a few similar experiences recently; not plagiarism but the use of the same music. For instance, I thought my use of Bjork's "Oh So Quiet" was very clever and new, then a few weeks ago I came across another MoBstar who uses it too. However, my number is a classic cheeky striptease, hers a balloon pop, so as long as we don't use them at the same show, it's fine. And it can happen evern closer to home too! Earlier this year, I was performing at a High Tease event and really looking forward to the show, which included Missy Malone (who I have been friends with since school, long before we got into burlesque). When she came out to do her number, I found it was the same song I used for another piece. Again, totally different themes and looks for each act, but it shows how difficult it is to find something totally new and unused!
But, as the other ladies on here have said, as long as you talk to the existing performer, if you are at all worried about a new act and make sure it is very different, it should all be ok and we can continue to make delicious spectacles onstage for everyone's enjoyment!

Now thats interesting as I had thought of doing a balloon pop to oh so quiet huh should of none it was already done. I think there is so little music out there that we can not help but use songs that other people use. I think its if we do a very similar act than that is the problem.

Katy Kamikaze does a routine to that song - don't know if she actually uses 99, but I think they're definitely red ...
