Watch out, thieves about!
Hey all
Sorry this thread is not of a nicer tone but I had a rather unpleasant experience recently after performing at a show and I thought I should share some words of caution with the community.
So, I was asked to peform at a show recently, to which I agreed, for a fee plus expenses. On the evening, the performance went very well and there was generally a nice atmosphere in the club.
Towards the end of the evening, I was packing my things in the dressing room when the promoter came in to pay me. I was given cash, which I put in my purse, in my handbag and I continued packing. Shortly after, I left the dressing room to take some of my stuff out to the car. I came back, got the last of my things, including my handbag and left.
When I got back to the place I was staying, I went into my bag, opened my purse to find all the cash was gone. Nearly £100. Luckily my bankcards and camera were still there, but clearly someone had seen me getting paid then grabbed their opportunity while I was out of the dressing room.
Now, I know I perhaps should't have left my bag unattended in there, but you would think it safe to a certain extent in the dressing room, wouldn't you? Anyway, I was obviously quite upset and extremely p*ssed off at the whole thing but I've been told I will be reimbursed, which I am waiting for.
It's just a shame really, that there are some real nasty people out there, who will spoil things for others. Until this happened, I was having a great evening and would have loved to go back. But, it just goes to show, you can never be too careful.

These things happen unfortunately. It's odds on that you're going to experience it at some point but it doesn't make it any less of a bitter pill to swallow.
Whenever I pay performers at the end of a night, I ensure that they keep their money safe by getting them to stick it up their bottoms. I have also found that this is the safest place to keep all the door money too - although there have been a couple of times when I've accidentally paid performers with... ahem... loose bronze change!
Sorry for this ricker-related tangent. I should probably go to bed now!

You poor thing Daquiri! I hope if the reimbursement does not go to plan, you'll have some kind of insurance that at least covers part of the loss. x

Awww I am really sad to hear about this. It is awful to think that someone could do such a thing.
I have had costumes and make-up stolen in the past from dressing rooms and from then on I always used a hard case with combination lock which i put absolutely everything in.

Sorry to hear that honey
I have had make up stolen as well but never money. I have been in a couple of clubs recently were I have been a bit nervous about leaving my bag but its been okay. The only plan I have come up with is to take only one card and a small amount of money in my bag and I was thinking of getting a lock for my case so I could pop my make up bag and handbag in there in between shows. Its a hard one because if there is someone out there who wants to rob you they will.
I did light shows years ago in Back to Basics in leeds and at the end of the night I had to go round and turn off the slide projectors and wait an hour an hour for them to cool down. One night as I was going round I found one had gone missing those things were hot so they must still have a pretty bad scar on there body from stealing it. After that we had to chain them down, so sadly locks may be our only choice.
Hope you get paid quickly
Best

Well, I have learned from the experience. I was actually asked in front of everyone, when we sitting in the dressingroom how much I was due before the cash was handed over, which I found a bit awkward / embarassing. I think this probably should have been done a bit more subtley, as this is just an open invitation to thieves. It's sad that we can't trust people though.

That certainly wasn't handled well by the staff/manager then! The last thing I would expect in any situation is to mention money in front of other people, awkward and unprofessional.
I hope you get everything sorted out soon.
