Confidence Knocks!
Evening all :-)
I performed at a local nightclub last night, I did two routines, one at about 10.45 and another at around 11.30, basically between the band sets. The compere (is that spelled correctly?!) went on stage first to tell the audience the line up of the evening (I was sat at a table with my friends, so I was in the crowd). When the chappie announced "Burlesque Performer Miss Mina" some women on a table next to us commented "oh great, a f***ing stripper (excuse the language, I'm quoting...), just what we want to see, some little tart taking her clothes off" it was a rubbish thing for someone to say and it did knock my confidence a little and made me quite nervous. Luckily I had a really good friend there who helped me get ready for my routines (and I phoned my mum for a confidence boost, bless mums!) and they went down a storm lots of cheers and clapping and playing up to the crowd and I had great fun!!
Why do people feel the need to make comments like that though? The club is known in the area for having burlesque performances, so why go if you don't 'agree' or whatever!!! it's such a narrow-minded comment to make too!!!!
ok, I've finished ranting now :-)
Anyone else had similar experiences?

what a buch of sour pusses! i would feel exactly the same in your position. I have never had that experience but my boyfriend has told me that at some of the nights where i have performed with the dolls there have been girls in the audience going 'oh, i could do that way better' or 'that's not real burlesque' or whatever. because i have heard about it after the event it didn't affect my performance but if i had overheard people saying mean things like that i think it would definately put me on edge and make me feel a little out of my element.
On the other hand when these losers heard everyone cheering you i bet that shut them up pretty fast, it's just jealousy pure and simple.
Anyway, keep your chin up and don't let some little fools spoil your fun!

Sorry to hear about your experience Miss D. I do hope you haven't let it get to you too much. Sadly it's how people are, I gave up the chance of a professional career in dance (modern, latin & ballroom) because I simple couldn't tolerate the bitching, sniding and backbiting, and most of it from fellow dancers. When you choose to put yourself in the spotlight it does seem that, a jealous element of the pond life, deem it good sport to make such hurtful remarks that it knocks the stuffing out of you. I concur with the rest of the responses. F**k 'em, you carry on girl, and just raise your game. xx
Did you ever see how Barbara Streisand dealt with this problem?

It's beyond pathetic that instead of cheering somone on, slating someone is the chosen method.
It is plain jealously and boredom.
I have been known at one event to invite a 'slater' (not the roofing kind) onto stage to show me how it was done. Bless her ickle red face and bruised ego.
Yes I know it wasn't totally professional but neither was heckling me. The MD that employed me to perform at his company's summer ball was so appalled that he apologised live on stage.
He did find it hilarious that the girl (because she definately wasn't a lady) was so embarassed. I was very ladylike and cheeky with it!
Tee hee

I couldn't agree more. Insecurity ofetn leads to shi**y comments like that.
But at the end of the day, you're the one that stood up in front of the crowd made them smile and cheer and took the bow to raptuous applause. She just sat there sucking lemons all night.
Who's happier?
As for you Miss Broomstick Pilot, do you spend your life on Youtube? Brilliant clip!

I just want to congratulate you, Miss Mina.
It reminds me of that quote "Living well is the best revenge". You got up there, the crowd loved you, and the ignorant girl looked stupid. I'm sure she felt embarassed that after slating you, you got such a good response. I love it!

awwww, thanks guys. I'm lucky that I have some amazingly supportive friends who were all there and made lots and lots of noise (plus my lovely new man.... hehe). It's such a nice venue to perform in as well!
Broomy - my best friend had that reaction! :-D
I wasn't very happy with my first routine as my nerves got the better of me but I was really pleased with the second one.
But now I have flu :-(

Thats lame! Sadly there are sometimes these people at gigs, usually women. I have seen people sit right at the front very audibly abusing performers, loudly commenting about "I coudl do that better" etc. Me and some others once had some drunk women come up to us after and tell us that "thats not burlesque, you should watch Chicago to see what burlesque is, your acts are too sexual". Boy did she go on and on!
Its upsetting but it happens, you just have to ignore them I guess. Its all jealousy anyway.
