Should there be more male dancers in burlesque?
Dear all,
I got very excited to hear that this Friday at the Hip Hip @ Bethnal Green Working Mens Club there will be not one but two male burlesque performers! Although, I prefer the fairer sex, sometimes it is refreshing to see how men do it. After I saw Walter performing with the gorgeous Immodesty Blaize last year, I haven't seen any others! Where do they all hide? I actually thought that Walter was great, he really made me laugh, in a good way, but I also noted that not the whole audience got it. Why is this? Is there a place for men, apart from as singers or comedy/ magic acts, in this female dominated field? Has anyone else seen any brilliant male strip- acts?

I hear male slapstick burlesque performer "Carrington!" may have a future after his debut at High Tease last Thursday.

I'd like to say with pride that Sleazy Cheezy in Edinburgh (every four weeks at Studio 24- Check the calender!) has not one but two, count 'em, two! Male Burlesque Performers. Very lovely they are too! Lucky Strikes somehow always seems to end up in ass-less chaps (go to www.sleazycheezy.co.uk to see how enjoyable this is for the ladies.) and Impressive Johnson usually winds up in drag or being used and abused by the ladies!
Of course there's also our compere Johann Von Sleaze!

Should there be more male dancers in burlesque?
Well , I'm glad to hear there are a few brave men dancing their socks off amongst us ladies!
Talking of which, there is going to be interesting male cabaret acts to be seen at HIP HIP this Friday in Bethnal Green Working Men's Club. If you also fancy seeing what I get upto on stage, then, please come along! The more the merrier! Would love to meet more of you lovely burlesque lovers and performers! I've posted the event info on the Events Calendar. If you need any more info, drop me an email.
RED SARAH: You definitely have to get your friend off his backside to do the tap! It looks amazing and I think that, if you've got a talent/gimmick, you should use it!
p.s. Love your "Firey" number!

Re: Should there be more male dancers in burlesque?
We produced a "boylesque" section in the Exotic World Pageant in May, and had performers from New York, San Francisco, and Seattle, among other cities. You can see the winner on his myspace site:
http://www.myspace.com/tiggernyc
I've seen a lot of amazing male talent.
There was an article on queer burlesque that discussed some of the local male performers:
http://www.nyblade.com/2005/11-25/arts/main/burleyq.cfm
Trixie Little of Baltimore is partnered with The Evil Hate Monkey, and he strips.
One of the members of my troupe, Jonny Porkpie, is male, and he twirls tassels with the rest of us.
I'm in New York and don't know much about the scene in Europe.
Last night I went to Spiegeltent and saw an amazing performance by David O'Mer from Berlin--it may not have been burlesque, exactly, but it was definitely suited to a burlesque show, and very sexy and brilliantly executed.
Best,
Jo Weldon
