Funnily enough I was taught (a decade ago.sigh, sigh) to strip by a male stripper. Think that having worked with both male strippers and burlesque artists they are an invaluable part of both art forms. Moreover, it really annoys the abolishionists and orthodox feminists - so I say more men!

male strippers
When I first started performing in a burlesque show in the notorious Raymond Revue Bar(now Too2Much), our choreographer and teacher was also a man, and very camp, indeed. It is interesting to me how sometimes men will know much better how to move, how to look etc. Not saying that there aren't any women who are good at that aswell. I'll never forget how he could make a 5 minute show out of playing with one glove! That is the real deal, I think. But he also knew how to work with huge, moving props too. Amazing and unforgettable! It's a shame it had to close down in 2004. Londoners lost a true Soho landmark and a piece of burlesque history. At least Lady Luck is keeping the memory alive by having some burlesque performers. Yey!

Hello all, and hello Jo.
I was at New York Burlesque Fest last week (hopefully I will be posting a little report about it next week) And I was jolly impressed by all the boy-lesque tallent. Johnny Porkpie was great, as were all the other male acts. Tigger was demented in a wonderful kind of way. Most of the acts porodyd macho behaviour in some way and were really funny. Guess its just a matter of time til we get more boylesque here.

Following up on Jo's and Keda's notes about this year's NYBF and Exotic World and male dancers, I pulled together some photos of a number of the male performers at these events

to add some more visual depth to this thread. As you can see, some wear tassels, some wear pasties, and some go brazenly topless.

Get the men on stage!
Yes, there should be more male performers in the burlesque scene. For example, take the Blue Light Burlesque troupe from Montreal:
It could add something classy, like this:
Blue Light Burlesque
Or, it can spark some other kind of curiosity, like this:
Blue Light Burlesque
Thoughts?!

In NYC, we also have the amazing White Boom Boom, who's a classically trained dancer and former ballroom dance instructor. It's so great to see guys in burlesque! Sometimes, with all the girls in it, it feels like working in a harem.

Male burlesque...
To see a short TV documentary on a male burlesque perfomer, tune into BBC1 North East and Cumbria (apparently you can get it thru SKY too if you're not in the area) at 7pm tonight (Monday 9 Oct).
And you can see Carrington! take his first steps into the scene. . .
You can also see Miss Kittie Klaw explaining some of the history of burlesque at Lydia Thomson's grave.

Of course there should be
At EW this year the guy who won was great. It was a great burlesque (boylesque?) act. It certainly held it's own. I have been thinking about doing an act of my own. I am even making my own corset now! Hope my kids never see pictures of THAT!

Personally I look far better with my clothes on, and while I will stand on a dance floor if their is a pretty lady to dance around me, dancing on my own or in fact in a room that is not pitch black is a sight most people would pay good money not to see. MAybe I should try and get sponcership to not become a burlesque dancer..
