I love Christmas time but not because I get presents. I use my days off for the holidau period to volunteer. Whether its working the night shift at the Drug and Alcohol Dependency Centre for Shelter or spending Christmas day with the OAPs left behind in the nursing homes. I love it all.

Nope, the Roman Census, to which his mum and dad were traveling to was always done around what is now "easter" time.
The Romans decreed that EVERYONE had to go back to the town they were born in for the census hence the reason Juses was born in Bethlehem..............What is not generally is that there are TWO Bethlehems in the same area..................One is the one we know which was/is a big town and the other was basically a small hamlet.
The "Holy Church" in the UK decided to bring the pagan ritual of "Yule" under the auspices of the Church and moved it back from the 21st Dec to the 25th Dec so as to bring all the Pagans etc to heel under the Churches roof as it were. In the Witches/Pagan world, on the 21st December the Oak King is destroyed by the Holly King, this is why the Church moved Christs birthdate from around Eostarte to 25th December, to bring together the Christ Child and the Old Gods. All Saints is another bastardisation of the Pagan "New Year" when the veil betwixt this world and world of the dead is at its thinnest and we can communicate with dead family and friends, the Catholics call this eve/day "All Saints and hold it on the 2nd November whilst the Pagan one is Sowain or Hallowe'en to you who aren't in the know.
But, scrape away all bollox and bullshit that comes with this time of year we still ahve the feelings of goodwill and hope for a better year ahead, this will probably never be wiped out from us, it is much to ingrained over this past 30,000 or more years.

I started volunteering when I was in the on call one year over the holiday period. i felt dumb wasting the day sat on my own so went to the local OAP home with cookies. Then it all escalated from there. I have a fab time with the elderly people. they sing songs round the piano about yester year. They show my photos of them in their youth. It is great fun.

That sounds fun, I love singing round the piano! Unfortunately when I've tried to volunteer at the local OAP home they pretty much weren't interested. I would've had to jump through so many loops it's ridiculous. I gave up in the end - they obviously didn't really want volunteers.
