wow thanks for the replies!! I'm gunna steer away from IUD I think. I went to the clinic yesterday and had my arm torn to peices and now sore But I was given a lower dose of microblah blah pill as that one made me put weight on (though SMELLING a bloody curry makes me put weight on!! haha) So fingers crossed my cycle will stop for more then a day and then phew!! as for your little problem kari, If your certin you don't want kids you might as well get steralized? I think your period stops not surethough?

You can get the IUS - which is what the IUD with hormones is called to differentiate them - in Britain. It's the mirena coil and should make your periods lighter. And with the hormones being released in your uterus it's a much lower dose which can only be a good thing.

Kari - with sterilisation you'd still have periods so it wouldn't help if you have problematic periods. The IUS might help you. If you have period problems the options which help all seem to have hormones unfortunately.

I was on the pill (microgynon then yasmin) for about 4 years. I actually had more weight gain with yasmin than microgynon weirdly as people tend to be the other way round.

Now I'm on implanon. Had it about 6 weeks ago and so far I've been fine. No bleeding at all *touch wood*. From the various people I have talked to about it, the general consensus seems to be that in regards to bleeding, after about 6 months the majority of women will stop having periods. But they may have troublesome bleeding before then. As for the other symptoms, I've not had any personally yet and I haven't asked much about them because for me my problems are my periods.

Hmmm... I went on Microgynon 3 years ago as a size 10/12 and in that time I've put on 4 stone going up to an 18, even though my eating patterns didn't change and I ended up being MORE active than before!
I've tried dieting and I've joined the gym (and been very good at keeping it up too!) but the weight's being stubborn.

    I wonder if it's related?

I was on microgynon for just over 2 years and went from a size 10/12 to a size 16 despite having a good diet and fitness regime. I've gone back to the Depo injection now as I was happy on it and it never caused me any problems

Umm, let me think ..... YES!

I put my weight on with Depo rather than with Microgynon, but it was the same thing - eating less and exercising more did nothing to shift it. I'd say there's more than a good chance that your weight gain is due to hormones

Since I read this thread, I've been looking up other forms of contraception and now I'm so CONFUSED!

I think a trip to the doctor is in order.

Whoa, so glad it's not just me who had the weight gain experience ! There are sometimes people who claim that ladies who gain weight on the pill use it as an excuse when they really have a bad lifestyle of fatty food and not enough exercise. I've always been in the other camp who blamed the pill and my other medication! My GP's theory is that the pill increases your appetite, and I guess this must be the case as I do get pretty hungry. I try to snack on wholemeal toast and things that aren't that fatty though. I was a size 10 and am now a large size 14.

I'm scared my Cerazette will do the same to me, and worse still give me bad skin. I get compliments about my clear skin and don't want to ruin it. It is impossible to determine what the effects will be of a certain pill just by looking up on the internet though. Everyone is different, and of course the people who have had bad experiences tend to shout about it more than those who found it to be good. Pretty much every contraception type I've read about has mentioned weight gain as a possible side effect, or I know someone who got it. Depo injection is another one!

Thanks for the info about sterilisation, Emiwee. I don't think I'd bother then! Sterilisation does appeal to me as a contraceptive measure but it's very uncommon to get it done at 25, most doctors don't like to take the risk you might change your mind when you get older and then sue them. Probably more sensible to go with something less permanent and reversible, and which will actually control the periods!

Glad I could help Kari yeah sterilisation doesn't stop the hormones being released so even though you can't get pregnant you'll carry on having periods. And as you said it's unlikely a doctor will agree to do sterilisation because of your age.

From what I've read, IUD is the only one that doesn't list weight gain as a side effect.

But then, of course, everyone reacts differently so you can never be sure of these things.

The copper IUD wouldn't cause weight gain cause there are no hormones in it but not sure about the mirena coil.
