How do I figure out who to vote for?
Hi everyone,
so the elections will soon be upon us and I feel terrible that I didn't vote last time around but I was just so confused about who would best represent my views. This time I don't want to be caught with my pants down!
I know there is a lot of hype and hyperbole around the election campaigns but a lot of it covers issues I am not really interested in or that wouldn't affect me much one way or the other. However there are other issues I feel strongly about and I'd love to know which party (probably out of the major three) most reflects my views.
I considered making a questionnaire to ask where each party stands on the issues I actually care about but I don't suppose anyone would have the time to reply to it or they would just send me general bumph. Does anyone have a clue how to figure this one out as I really want to vote for the party that is most likely to represent me (not that I expect any of them to come that close!).
Or failing that if people know of a party like this one I'll join up like a shot! Marge vs. Singles, Seniors, Childless Couples and Teens, and Gays - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Any suggestions?

OK well i don't mean this from a political point of view, and i don't much understand where each party would really go if they where in power. what they say and what they do has always had its differences. to what point to we think change will actually make any positive difference to us. i cant see how two people slating each other would make me want to vote for them. more taxes cuts on immigration. reducing crime rates neither of them say how they are going to do this. For me i want to see evidence of reality before i actually cast my vote, silly questionnaires though my door and election leaflets leave me having more faith in my gran than in either of the main parties. Our country in a state of collapse due to them and they don't seem to prove how their going to get us out of it.
I think its all like the x factor now, were voting for the next best thing from what they can see.
personally this double act don't have my vote!!!

I'm not going to vote for one of the big three, because frankly none of them have proven they can be trusted to do much of anything - if there's a candidate in my area I'll vote Green!
I really would urge people to vote for who they actually *want* to get in, rather than being of the attitude that "well I would like to vote for them, but they'll never get in so I'll vote for so and so instead" - if the amount of people who said that voted for who they actually wanted in power the country would be very different indeed!

It's just so difficult, especially as I don't have the usual views about certain popular issues (the environment, family/child issues etc) and some of the things I feel strongly about are only discussed in a cursory manner if at all (making things easier for first time buyers, recognising the needs of child-free adults and couples just as much as families with children, getting long term unemployed people back into work etc).
I feel like the different parties run around courting the different groups they think matter - parents, young people, the elderly, the very rich, the very poor, people who are interested in green issues etc etc but I don't fit into any of these categories. As a young-ish, cohabiting, child-free person on a relatively low income (but not low enough for any sort of government support) who can't afford to get on the housing ladder, and can't afford to move to a nice, safe area, with a degree but no prospects better than entry level work, with no strong feelings about causes such as the environment or recycling I feel as though I am invisible to all of the major parties... and as far as I know there isn't a minor party to vote for that does care about my needs and vote (although if there is and you know if it do let me know!)
It's a real pity as there are probably other people like me out there who feel as though none of the big parties give two hoots about their needs and that could lead to these people not using their vote at all, or worse...

I feel really guilty about not knowing who to vote for ever since a lad I knew as a teenager told me if I didn't vote I was throwing all the efforts of the women who fought for me to have that right back in their faces. May sound twee, but I do feel very uncomfortable having this hard won right and potentially wasting it ... I need to get clued up and fast >_<

Another thing to bear in mind is that there certain parties that you really do not want to see in power. The biggest threat voter apathy brings is that these parties have hardcore followers who will always turn up to vote for them, even while "mainstream" parties' support dwindles.

I agree with BBB. Where I live we do not have all party representation, so I have to vote tactically based who I don't want, rather than who I do want, in power. I must admit, I'm a devotee of voting, and it does make me cross when the nation will vote for some halfwit in the Big Brother House, but can't be bothered to vote for something that affects actual life and society. And I can't help feeling that if people don't vote, then they shouldn't complain about the state of the country - you have the power to make a difference.
Do it. Even if the party you want doesn't get in, at least you had your say
