“There are only two tragedies in life: one is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it.”
Oscar Wilde coined that one. I love this quote so much I want to get it as part of a tattoo. I feel it speaks to me because I am someone who (especially when I was younger) can be very envious and it reminds me that even those who seem to have a charmed life probably have all the misfortunes that come with their prizes. I'm a bitter old bag!

"If at first you don't succeed, failure may be your style."
"Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag them down to your level."
Both by Quentin Crisp. I like the idea of for once someone saying that it's alright not to constantly trying to win and be over-ambitious!
I'm also fond of Dolly Parton's "I hope people realize that there is a brain underneath the hair and a heart underneath the boobs." I find it quite touching, actually.
