With only roughly 4 months left it limits some things... I could suggest watching the entire Lord of the Rings film trilogy back to back (with loo/food breaks) in one day. Extended edition.

I'm afraid that I was thoroughly underwhelmed by the films - probably as I was brought up on the books!

My dad is a rather large Tolkein fan so I was brought up on the books aswell. I had a couple of issues with the films but on the whole rather enjoyed them.
At the very least it's something to say you've done.

Heh, a good idea if you're on your own. Alas, I was watching with others so it would have been a little bit awkward.

Feel the spring dew on your feet.
Take a hot air ballon ride
Go gliding.
Take your bike test
volunteer in a soup kitchen
become a befreinder
skinny dip - in someone elses pool!
record your own CD - regardless of how bad a singer you are.
hire an expensive car for the day
splash out for an expensive meal and champagne
stay one night in a top hotel
Got to night club and see how many girls you can pick up
Change sex for the day
watch the stars and satelites go over head one night
don't go home for a night - sleep on a beach if you can
send flowers to someone you know anonymously

Make sure that you do something for you, somethig that you wouldn't normally do and include doing something for someone else

Weirdly enough my vanilla self did a 40 things before I'm 40 and kept a blog on it too - erm, the only problem is towards the end of it I had a breakdown (I'm sure there was no connection EDN, honest it was all to do with losing my job not turning 40 or due to any list) and deleted the blog and everything to do with it.

What I can remember from what I did was:

  • audition for Big Brother just for the hell of it (I shocked a load of teenagers/20-somethings by taking my knitting along whilst in the queue, lulling them into a false sense of security and then taking my top off when we got to the audition)
  • doing a Singing in the Rain routine in the pouring rain
  • getting my first tattoo
  • completing a Times cryptic crossword (I seem to remember it took me months of trying this each day before I finally completed a whole one)
  • starting a blog (this was great fun and people loved watching and commenting on my exploits)
  • learning to ride a bike (I failed on this one, still can't do it, but decided to stop beating myself up about not being able to do it)
  • writing a will and setting out my choices for funeral and how I would be dealt with when I die
  • painting a self portrait - this was both difficult (having to look at myself that much when I didn't really like myself at the time) and fun
  • reading a novel in a day - this took several attempts before I finished one in a day, I can remember I failed with the English passengers (it took 2 days) but I finally succeeded with The Righteous Men by Sam Bourne
  • go on a road trip (this included going to Electric Brae in Ayrshire where cars appear to beat gravity and roll up hill, it was freaky)
  • go to a zoo (I hadn't been to ones in decades)
  • learn to tango
  • learn to skateboard (lots of bruises with this one and I can't say I ever really mastered it)
  • write to a childhood hero (mine was Valentina Tereshkova.....yes I always have been a nerd)
  • learn to play the drums - this one was fantastic and I TOTALLY recommend it
  • plant a tree
  • plant a time capsule
  • come out of the closet (yep, that was the year I told everyone about my madness and my gayness)
  • stay up all night for the oscars and greet the dawn
  • study quantum physics and talk about it in the pub
  • knit underwater and in 4 famous places around the world....I did St Mark's Square in Venice, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, on Juliet's balcony in Verona and on the Ironbridge in Shropshire
before I went loopy and it all went to pot I had a fantastic time doing all this and it's given me some fab experiences and great chat-up lines well worth doing! Good luck!

I've done quite a few things that you youngsters have suggested - and before I was 40 too.

I need to do a list of things to do before I'm 50 now.
