    Default Berwick/Edinburgh?

    Hi

I'm doing a project on Burlesque and would like to talk to people who are involved in the practise of burlesque so that I can learn about it from people who really know. I live in Berwick-upon-Tweed and spend time in Edinburgh if anyone would like to meet up and help me with my project. I may also be required to open a burlesque club later this year and will be looking for performers so watch this space ...

I could possibly be of help lovely, will send you a private message.

(Also, I based my entire final year at university on burlesque -based projects & studies & graduated with a 2:1 degree, an internationally selling magazine, & now I'm performing - this could really open doors for you! Good luck).

    Hi!

I am an American burlesque performer, and founded the burlesque society at my college (which has spawned several projects and studies by members and other students). I will be studying in Edinburgh this year (I arrive next week), and would be more than happy to chat/perform if you are still looking for participants.

    Good luck with the project.

    Cool

Well Lilli, you probably should of come to Edinburgh just a week or two earlier for the Festival, you probably could of performed at it and earned some money! Edinburgh gets a bit boring for the rest of the year, August defo the best time to be there! ah well, I would be interested to meet up and chat although until I see what my timetable ids like etc. it will be hard to arrange, I imagine things are similar your end, I really need to speak to my drama teacher also and find out if I can still do this project having not managed to watch or read up on any burlesque this summer, and what exactly it will involve, however if I do I would probably need performers for at least one night this term(semester) and if you are willing to help with this I would be extremely grateful.

    Aero-
Hopefully, I'll be able to attend at least part of the festival next year! In the meantime, I'm looking forward to exploring what Edinburgh has to offer...even in the off season
As of yet I have no idea what my schedule will be like, but I'm always happy to chat about burlesque . If you do end up with the project, I would recommend Horrible Prettiness as a good book to look at. I read it last year and really enjoyed it. Feel free to contact me when you know what you need!

    Best of luck,
    Lilli

Do you happen to have a spare copy of Horrible Prettiness with you in Edinburgh? They didn't have one in the school Library for some reason, can't think why ... I spoke to my Theatre teacher today and we came up with an idea of using the style of Burlesque to tell a story, with multiple characters. Somehow we decided on Little Red Riding Hood (I don't know if they have this fairytale in America). The central character, little red riding hood, would have a red outfit including a red hood which represents Female passion and sexuality. She would betray her mother who would be conservative and pious by eating some of the cakes she is taking to her Grandmother, and she also symbollically strays from the path be seduced by a Shakira-esque she wolf character, who she would later find in her Grandmother's bed, disguised as her grandmother. Little red Riding Hood would be devoured by the wolf to go along with her Grandmother, and this would represent how by straying from "the path" towards Lesbianism, she is devoured by lust and sexuality of the she wolf. She is rescued from this by the Lumberjack character, who uses his axe(a phallic symbol), to open up the stomach (cue blood and gore) of the she wolf so that little red could emerge again, to marry the Lumberjack, giving a happy ending This is just a vague idea at the moment, however if you would be interested in playing either Little Red Riding Hood or the She Wolf in a one-off performance, it would be greatly appreciated x

    Hi guys,

If you are in Edinburgh the town has a thriving Burlesque and Cabaret scene at the moment!

The next fully burlesque event on the calendar that I know of is Captain's Follies presents: Boys will be Girls on thursday 23rd September in the Voodoo Rooms Speakeasy.

After that there will be Looks That Kill at Opium, Va Va Voom at Electric Circus, and Kabarett at the Voodoo Rooms.

There is also Confusion is Sex at the Bongo Club (although it's more of a club), and an Edinburgh Dr Sketchy's as well.

That's before you get to Vegas (not always got burlesque , but usually has some for the bigger venues), or any of the one off shows and events like Torture Garden or the Mating Ritual!

And if that's not enough, just along the M8, Glasgow is bursting with regular shows of it's own!

So, if you fancy a chat about the local scene, I'd be more than happy to rant on about it, and I know for a fact I'll be at the Captain's Follies, as I've been roped in to record the routines.

    Hope that's of some help.

    Iolaire:

I've already marked some of those, but thank you so much for the large list! Do you have websites for any of those venues/events? I just moved here and am still getting my bearings...

    Aero:

Thank you so much for the performance offer! Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of the book with me. It is, however, available here: [ame=http://www.amazon.co.uk/Horrible-Prettiness- Burlesque -American-Cultural/dp/0807843164/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1284076546&sr=8-1]Horrible Prettiness: Burlesque and American Culture Cultural Studies of the United States: Amazon.co.uk: Robert Clyde Allen: Books[/ame]

I don't want to promise anything, as I haven't registered for classes yet. I'm a little concerned with how my schedule will look once that's taken care of. However I am interested to see how this goes, so when it gets closer to your production please feel free to contact me. Hopefully by that point I'll know if I'm too busy or not and can give you a real answer.

Pretty much all the events have facebook pages (in fact here's the Captain's Follies one! ). Kabarett, Va Va Voom and Torture Garden are run by Dee Itsy, who's site is www.itsycollective.org but I think she's the only one with a dedicated website just at the moment.

There is also a great group on Facebook called: Scottish Burlesque & Cabaret; What's On! that most the events post on.

Hope that's of some use, and hopefully will see you at the Follies or some other event soon.

@Aero: Sorry, don't know of anything on the 18th.
