Where I stand in life
"Stripper" name: (notice the quotation marks, I'm making fun of myself, not implying that burlesque is all about stripping ) Amelie de Milo
Education level: Not quite finished with high school yet, plan on going to university
IQ: 137
Shoe size: european 36/37
It seriously sucks to be 17 and to want to be a burlesque performer. It's a terrible combination! Because...not only can't you perform, they also won't let you into most events.
Same goes for pin-up modeling.
OH, and classes , not allowed to take those either.
So, yay, another dead end...WARNINGWarning: This is an Old Thread

Try not to see it as a bad thing. Use this year to research burlesque , really find out what styles most appeal to you by watching videos on youtube, old films, and anything that inspires you!
Build your wardrobe slowly, hone your look and persona.
Think about ideas for acts, keep a notebook and write down any ideas for themes, costumes, music and props.
And practice practice practice dancing, posing, and as you're going to be peeling, removing your clothes!
I know burlesque in non-exsistant where you are, but are there any dance classes ? This summer I want to start learning tap, swing and ballet and I think they'll really help with my performance.

Aww... if I had a year to spare I'd train to be a mime for a year
and do as many other types of
dance
as possible. Then when you start, you'll have a lot to fall back on!

Wow! That's a super idea... I heard David Bowie trained in mime and he felt it really informed his performance.
Gaelle I totally agree with what the others have said above - I would say perhaps join an amateur dramatics group, or take dance lessons or do something that gets you used to the techniques of rehearsing and performing so that you can hit the ground running when you start burly without any of the worries of stage fright etc.
Also, why not start learning a skill that might make your future burlesque acts stand out - it could be anything, contortion, knife throwing, hula hoop, areial skills, tap dance , a musical instrument.... the list is endless but anything that makes your act unique will help you do better when you do start.
Good Luck

I think you're very lucky! You're at the beginning, better than being in the middle! Just think of all the things that lie ahead of you. I'm nearing 30, not old by any means, but I'm just at the beginning of trying to hone my sewing business- something that I had been doing since I was 16, but never got around to doing it professionally until now. I spent 8 years doing military service, and had my son at 20. So I put all my dreams on the backburner. But now that my son is older it's much easier for me to spend time doing the things I want to do. And having a 9-5 job is nice as I get more time at home- unlike the hustle and bustle of the military life.
You're very lucky in that you know what you want to do, and the whole world is your oyster!

it can't be that long until you're 18
it's not the end of the world that you're not 18. x

That gives you a major head start then!

You can easily incorporate either or both into your burlesque . xxx
