Talking "Stripping to draw attention to myself" act

I think I've just had my first real idea for a good burlesque routine.

I want to do a piece with another man on stage, or maybe he doesn't even need to be there.

I want to get the point across that I'm trying to get someone's attention. First I step on his foot, do cart wheels, cough loudly, "run" into him...Then, while totally over-exaggerating I start to strip , meanwhile always getting more and more upset when he still doesn't notice me. Only when I take the bra off does he look at me, but seeing as there are enough bare busted ladies out there, he turns away, once again, bored.

Yes, this was born from the discussion I had with my boyfriend about how such a small piece of fabric can't make much of a difference.

    What do you guys think?

Kittie did a sketch on those lines one time, it goes under the title of Toff and tails i think, anyway, it is on the MoB video page.

Sounds fun - I use something similar for my Cinders routine - I figured that it has to take more then arriving late to get the princes attention

    Hey there,

As Purbeck mentions, Toff and Tails use this as a component of their 'Piccadilly Prowler' routine from the MoB 'Victorian Values' review show. It has also been used as the premise for many of the routines at Club Noir in Glasgow (or at least it did in the years when I went), if you search youtube I'm sure you'll find some examples.

Don't get disheartened that your first good idea has been done before. I have had several 'good original ideas' recently, only to research them and find they are not as original as i thought. It is very hard these days to come up with something completely new, with so many performers now even the best/top/headliners are not completely unique in their ideas.

    Default ideas.

You will sometime come up with an idea that has already been done and you have 2 choices:

    1. move on and try and come up with something else
    2. use the idea, but try and find a way of doing it that is different

I had an idea to do a dance based on beyonce's song 'all the single ladies' and everyone was doing it. It happens.

Your idea sounds good, and not having seen the routine, I would go with the second choice. I know i have some ideas going round in my head now.

    Damn, damn damn!

Well, question, if I figure out a way to do it differently than what she did...could I still use it? I mean, I'll have to wait at least a year to perform anyway! By that i should figure out a different way to do it, right?

I wanted to do it like a bit of a Jane Austen parody...

Remember my PM about being yourself? Just do that and you will find that the routine will change as you practice and redevelope it over a few weeks.

My Parody of a certain magicians wife looked remarkedly similar to a Betty Paige routine until I got the magic cards etc out and going then I had to change the way I moved to suit what I was trying to do with the magic.

A year gives you time to research and experiment. Watch some DVDs if you haven't already, 'The night they raided minskys', 'Cabaret', and the 'ministry of burlesques' video are my favourites. View similar acts to the one that you want to do. What do you like or dislike about them, what props do they use. Do you use props or not? Why?

    Hope this helps?
