Burlesque for bigger girls?
Hi guys

I'm very new to burlesque . I've been interested and fascinated by it for a while but have only plucked up the courage to try it now. I am a bit worried though and wanted to ask if big girls can learn burlesque ? I'm sorry if it seems like a stupid question but my friends are divided in opinion. And help or advice would be much appreciated!
Thank you,

Thankfully there are no size rules in burlesque , i recently watched a youtube video of a dancer linked on one of these threads and she was a larger lady and was really good, i can't remember her name though.
And there are many different types of burlesque not just the american style strip tease. Go and see as many performances as you can and you will see all shapes, sizes and sexes (erm ok just the two sexes).
But the main thing is whatever you choose to do enjoy it, if you enjoy it so will your audience, whether it's your friends, partner of a theatre full.
Good luck.

Divided in opinion? Pffft! Don't listen to anyone who says you can't, there are loads of gorgeous "larger ladies" in burlesque and anyone can do it. I've seen girls of all sizes perform. It's mostly about confidence and charisma, and having unique and entertaining ideas for acts which make a successful burlesque dancer I think, and many others would agree.
Maybe you should start by going to a workshop or lessons to build up confidence dancing in front of others, they are good fun and you will see that people of all sorts want to tread the boards. Go to as many local burlesque shows as you can, and look at the girls you see performing , not all of them are tiny and skinny but they are still gorgeous aren't they?

Divided in opinion???? Have your friends SEEN any real burlesque or are they judging it all on Pussycat Dolls?????
Burlesque is for ALL shapes / sizes / ages / ethnicities / genders. There really are NO barriers. I'm 37 and a size 14 / 16 and I have performed at shows with 20year olds who were size 8 - 10 and we ALL got the same AMAZING crowd reaction.
You should take your friends to some REAL burlesque shows and then see what their reaction is. Just go for it sweetie - you'll LOVE it, honest!!!

And from a male point of view. Size means squat diddley in Burlesque Persian. Pixie, Vie O'lette, Tempest Devyne to name but three "larger" ladies who grace our stages with their eloquence.

Sorry to be a 'thread bandit' but Debs.......I love your new 'signature' line from Alice in Wonderland. It fits my life purrrrrrfectly. I might just have to steal it and incorporate it into my home / workplace somehow as it was a GENIUS find, hope you don't mind.
Anyway - sorry to go off-topic folks. And now.......back to the thread.......
kisses

Well, I do think burlesque is, and should be, for everyone, BUT I really must say that I do not enjoy watching a very "voluptuous" (tries to not say fat) lady perform a striptease.
She may be incredible at it, but the only thing I'll be thinking about is why people let themselves "go to waste" like that.
I know I'm going to get a mass of hate coming at me for saying that, but hey, it's my opinion.
Also, I see a difference between having a few extra pounds and being truly fat. If you start to drift off into double chin territory, you're in trouble!

Personal opinion.
I just know that when I look at video's on youtube and I see an overweight girl doing a routine, I won't be watching her dance ...
