I do the same thing! Haha it really is a very helpful show!
I also look in magazines and also at other people's profiles- not in a copy cat way but to see what works for different shapes. What works for a tall, slim girl might not for a short curvy one.
I can feel a bit self-concious at shoots at first. My most recent two were my most fun and produced the best photos, so just have fun. Don't worry about feeling silly as those are normally the best poses- otherwise you may look like you can't be bothered. As you get into it, and start having fun, you will relax and end up looking more natural.
Practice the "smiling with the eyes". This means that if you do not have a smile on your face, you don't look bland and dead-eyed. The mirror is your friend- for poses and expressions.
