shimmy advice
hi all,
i'm very new to the burlesque scene and still practising, so hopefully i'll be good enough at some point to perform as well.
i got the MOB DVD for beginner and it's great help, but i always have some trouble with the chest shimmy. i always tend to move my arms but not my shoulders. do you have any advice or tips that i really need to look out for to learn a nice fast shimmy?
also i seems to be the only one interested in burlesque in the south of germany, so if any of you know of performers there, let me know!
Thanks to all of you!!!

Hi Julia!
Welcome
I couldn't shimmy for a long time. My problem was that I would wiggle my bottom half rather than my shoulders. I learnt by very slowly moving each shoulder forward in turn then speeding up as I got the hang of it.
I just practiced and practiced until I was confident with my shimmy skills
Good luck with it

I can do the bottom half quite well (well it kind of shimmies itself) but I worry when doing the top half because all I can feel is my bingo wings flapping and I'm worried I might take off!

I reckon if you want to do a chest shimmy and your arms keep getting in the way then put your arms behind your back or in your pockets so the can't move as much and just really get comfortable with moving just your chest.
Or (like December said) get yourself into the shimmy position and then shimmy in slow motion and get used to how that feels and gradually build up and build up until one day you're a shimmy queen!

Julia, I forgot to say.
I don't know of any performers in Germany but Freya Fox is German (though she lives in England now) so she may be able to help.
Cherry Berlin also speaks German but I think she is English. She still may be able to help. She may have German friends who would be able to help?
It's worth PMing both of them and seeing if they can help
Keep shimmying!

Just keep trying and practising and suddenly one day it will just click into place. I never used to be able to shoulder shimmy at all, but I kept trying it and one day I suddenly found that I could. Although it does tend to be a full body shimmy because I just can't stop my hips from going at the same time!

I'm an ass shaker too! Full body I can do but just can't stop my hips when I'm trying to do the shoulder shimmy. Oh well practise makes perfect I guess...

Eh, why bother? The way I see it, if my tassels are twirling (the only reason I ever do a shoulder shimmy) then who cares if my hips are going too? No one's going to complain that you can't stop wiggling your hips, now are they? ^_^
