Name help
Hi all, my name is Sue and I'm very excited about finding all you lovely people.
I've been experimenting with some names and I can't find anyone in burlesque yet called Miss Sue Denim or Miss Sue de Nim although I also like the idea of having my first name as Suede and then Neme or Nim as a surname. Have any of these been taken?
Also when I was researching names I found some references to a Burlesque Name Register: http://uk.msnusers.com/BurlesqueName...eregister.msnw but that page seems to not be there. Does anyone know how we do register names or how I can check if there are any other Sue Denims already performing?
Thanks all xxxx

Personally I think Sue de Nim is fantastic! Took me a while to get my head round it though ^_^ I think if you're going to use it, use the variation with three words, as having 'Denim' as your surname makes the pun work much less well - you immediately think of the fabric and pronounce it like that, putting the emphasis in the wrong place and losing the pun (that's what was throwing me off ...)
I've never heard of anyone using a name similar to that, but there are ways of finding out. Google the name, including all the possible spelling variations you can think of, along with the word 'burlesque', and if nothing comes up then you're reasonably safe. Also searching the name on social networking sites like myspace might throw up results and people you should be aware of. Finally just asking people in the scene - as you've done here - should help, as if anyone has heard of a performer with the same name, they'll let you know.
The burlesque name register wasn't very widespread, I don't think - not very many performers seemed to use it. I know Amelie will be along any minute to say that joining Equity is the best way of protecting your burly name!

I've tried everywhere you suggested and can not find anyone else in the burlesque world. There's a rock singer in Enlgand but she's on a band myspace page. I still can't decide between Sue de Nim and Sue Denim. I quite liked the idea of making my costumes from denim as a sort of signature. I will think on that a bit more.
Isn't equity just for actors?

I think Sue de Nim is really good. I think Suede Nim has the potential to get mispronounced, which isn't a good thing. Sue Denim could have the same problem, but probably not as bad.
Denim is cool! Have never been able to sew with it though, never sits right. Using solely Denim could limit your costuming a little bit, but then again I dont have a great amount of imagination when it comes to sewing so Im sure there are a million things you could do with it!

Hi there!
I definitely think Sue de Nim over Sue Denim. It sounds a bit more sophisticated.
If you wanted to use denim, you still could and I'm sure people would understand why.

Just thought, if you really wanted to use Sue Denim, maybe change the spelling to Sue Denime? This would probably alter the way people pronounce it as they wouldn't see it as "denim" and jump to that pronounciation.
I'm not sure how coherent that was- I'm pretty hungry- but I hope it makes sense.

The last thing I am is sophisticated, which could be a very good reason for going for Miss Sue de Nim. If I'm going to use a nom de plume then I might as well create a new character for myself. Shame I can't pretend I'm 36-24-36.

Sue Denime, I think I like that.
Yes, it's time for an early lunch - I've got the munchies.

It's cute but bear in mind that Sue Denim - of Robots In Disguise (which is an electro band fronted by the lady in question along with Dee Plume - Noel Fielding's girlfriend) uses the same pun.
