Default I have never done anything like this before!

I have never done Burlesque before, or had a lesson, but I find it all amazing and wonderful.

I am soon to be moving to Glasgow and I was wondering if anyone could tell me of any clubs, of places to get lessons.

Or even any tips for a routine or a name and whereto get amazing costumes and props at prices which dont mean I need to break into a bank!

Is Ella Fitzgerald appropriate music?

And here is the big question... How do you get the chance to perform on stage and is it hard to get a gig?

Love you all!

Kiss Kiss

Hello! Welcome!

Glasgow is a fantastic place to be moving to for burlesque.

Gypsy Charms runs Burlesque classes run through DanceHouse - DanceHouse - National Dance Agency

She also runs beginners classes with Viva Misadventure through the Ministry of Burlesque Academy in Glasgow

If you can get yourself to the Dr Sketchy's Glasgow 1st Birthday Bash as this would be a baptism by fire/wonderful introduction to burlesque in Scotland....and lots of fun - it's on 10th August, I'm not sure if you'll have moved by then

I see you've already joined the Scottish MoB Group - so there are some wonderful people in that to chat to.

I found an e-book from Jo (Boobs) Weldon from the New York School of Burlesque the best starting point for finding out about burlesque and it's cheap (and putting ideas in my head to aks others about).

Also check back through threads on this website and read anything and everything people ask/talk about - I bet everything you want to know has already been discussed - it's a fantastic resource, especially for ideas about make-up, costumes, props etc. Don't be afraid to ask questions either - the forums are terrific sounding boards.

I also recommend trying to see as many acts as possible, either live or type burlesque into youtube, sit back and enjoy. Check out myspace too. Watch and learn as much as you can to help you decide what styles you like and can see yourself performing. And what costumes do you love. Don't copy wholesale, but do gather lots of inspiration.

Lots of burlesque shows have a slot or two for newbies, so if you want to perform then you'll find somewhere to - but again, check out threads about this on the forums, look in the 'castings' section of the website (tab at the top of the page) and network with other performers in the area - it's amazing how supportive you'll find them and how things just snowball when you start asking.

Lots of luck!!

Hi Miss Delightful, welcome to the glittering world of burlesque!

Thanks for the plug, Tempest

The Scottish scene is bustling and exciting and Tempest is right, the Dr Sketchy Birthday Party would be an excellent introduction to the scene in Glasgow.

Before then there is a a normal Dr Sketchy Glasgow session on the 27th of July, be sure to befriend us at MySpace to keep up to date on performers and news.

We also offer an open stage spot every now and again at Dr Sketchy Glasgow which allows burgeoning performers an opportunity to have a go at performing in front of an audience, again if you join us at MySpace you can keep abreast of when the next one will be.

I cannot recommend highly enough The Academy of Burlesque, Gypsy & Viva's classes are the definitive introduction to burlesque performance. They are reasonably priced, extremely friendly and everyone graduates happy and satisfied, I've never heard a bad word about them. In addition to all of that both Gypsy and Viva are trained, professional dancers who are fully qualified to teach the art which is really a very important factor to look for.

And after you've whet your appetite with The Academy of Burlesque you can hone your performance skills by doing a course with RwP Education.

There's also Rockaburley, run by Daiquiri Dusk & Cat Aclysmic. Then there is Spangled Cabaret - which is a great wee night that is very supportive of newcomers.

The above are ongoing, but during the Edinburgh Fringe be sure to check out The Bongo Cabaret Club, running for 16 nights and being produced by Wild Card Kitty (who also hosts and produces Dr Sketchy Edinburgh) and the MoB are producing Edinburgh High Tease at The VooDoo Rooms on the 7th, 8th & 9th of August - that's sure to be phenomenal.

Phew - think that's enough to be getting on with, hopefully see you around!

you are all being so helpful and nice... I LOVE THAT! Unfortunately I go away for the summer on the 11th july and dont return till 3rd September. So I miss all the exciting happenings during the fringe which is a bummer cos I am now legal enough to enjoy everything.

I will certainly look into Gypsy and Viva's classes. I just cant wait to get started.

Can you tell that I am excited?

whoop whoop! oh I just cant wait to start!

I am determined to be a Burlesque Dancer and nothing is going to stop me!

Love and Kisses

I too cannot recommend Gypsy and Viva's classes enough. That's where I got started, and as a lot of people have said, there's lots of exciting things happening in Scotland!
If you are away for the summer, you should be back in time for the autumn classes run by Gyspy, Viva & Dance House (in the Merchant City area of Glasgow).
The lovely folks at Rhymes with Purple are also good people to be in contact with, as they offer different workshops; the burlesque performance ones designed to follow on from Gypsy and Viva's classes, as well as other skills, like fire.

There are a variety of different classes out there; people on here will always give you their honest opinion so it's worth asking about other people's experiences, to decide what is best for you. I actually spoke to some women at a show recently, who told me they had done a burlesque workshop and were left in tears by the end of it (it's not any of the classes I have mentioned, just to be clear!) Instead of a friendly, learning environment, the ladies had felt more like they were taking part in an audition, rather than being taught anything and when the class finished, they felt "Fat and ugly" and it had put them off wanting to perform altogether. It's such a shame.
But, different people have different experiences and as long as you choose carefully and go for a qualified teacher with a good reputation, you should have a brilliant time!
Good luck, hope to see you at an event soon!
Daiquiri xx
