Hello chicklet,
Firstly - don't expect overnight miracles, you need to work at your flexibility over a sustained period to get anywhere as you can damage yourself if you push your body too hard, especially when it isn't used to it. For the ultimate in stretching I'd recommend yoga - ideally go to a couple of classes which should set you in the right direction. If you are already going to burlesque classes you might not want to make the financial and time commitment to another series of classes, but if you could just attend a couple then the instructor will be able to tell you if you are doing the stretches correctly. - and therefore safely. Also, yoga works according to the level of flexibility of the individual so no-one would expect you to wrap your legs around your head at the first session. There are a lot of good yoga books and DVDs around but seriously think about giving the classes a whirl. If nothing else then a good yoga class will give you a lovely glowing feeling afterwards.

I love Yoga and Pilates. I've really noticed a huge improvement in flexibility and balance.

The first (and only) yoga class I ever did left me feeling terrible! We were warned at the start that afterwards we would feel hungover - and I certainly did!

I will give a Yoga DVD a go. I really didnt think of yoga for some reason but that would seem the best thing,
Is Pilates the same type of thing? (if its not please dont shout at me, I was just asking!)

I'd suggest yoga, I gave it up because I couldn't get to the class after a while but I still do a lot of the stretches and they really help even just to feel a bit more energised. xx

Pilates is more to do with posture and specific muscle control.
I do both Yoga and Pilates but it's all included in my gym membership.
This is probably a better way to explain it

Oooh dear love! Not so good then? I've been lucky and had some great classes where following an extended relaxation period at the end of the class (much akin to meditation) I've glided out of the sessions feeling floaty-light. There are a million different types of yoga though so I suppose you've got to 'shop around.' Hope it hasn't put you off for life!

The best kind of yoga is Iyengar yoga, so if you can find a class or DVD that specifically does that then that's what I'd recommend. Basically, it's all about getting your breathing and posture and muscles all in the right position so you don't hurt yourself and don't feel like crap afterwards. Also it's really important to not feel ill or headachy when you're doing yoga as you will feel worse afterwards (though I don't quite know why!)
Anyway, that's my suggestion! Also, if nothing else do the stretches you were made to do in PE!!

Yoga is fantastic I love it. I have not been for about 6 weeks and my body hates me for not going. I have a class booked for Thursday and I am so happy. It can make you feel ill if you do certain stretches but I did not the first time I went. I am really lucky I have a great teacher who has been doing it for about 20 years and does a one to one class for me really cheep.
But it makes such a difference to my performances and also after. When I don't do it I end up with a sore back.
