Dance Routines
I was just wondering with Burlesque dance routines, is there any form of copyright with them? From the shows Ive seen everyone has been different but I suppose you get inspiration from seeing others dance.
Can you just adapt it into your own performances?
I am new into the Burlesque scene so I am getting all my ideas together.
Thanks xxxx

I'm not sure about copyright.
But I don't think people take to lightly to performers, taking credit for others hard work.
I think if the performer is a member of equity there routines may possibly be copyrighted
But as said on here a few times before, your style and performance should come from you, i:e have your personality in it and it should resemble you.

As long as its not blatently copying I can't see a problem using ideas. I think the best thing to do is to email or send a quick message to a performer who's inspired you and just ask if they mind you doing it. Good luck! xxxx

Good point, but it makes me wonder how so called "Tribute Bands" don't infringe copyright. They even use puns that make sure you think that their work is as good as the originals,as in The Bootleg Beatles. And, I can't remember the author, but on the back of the Harry Potter series, someone wrote a near parody, the first book being called: Barry Trotter & The Shameless Parody.
It goes on everywhere. In fact I do a reprise, with my other half, of Fred & Ginger's: Swingtime. No problem, although I always announce it as the work of the original artistes.

Actually I just had a situation like this. I teach bellydancing, and I found out another school was teaching one of my routines without permission. Handily, my partner is a lwayer and I asked him about it. He said that it is really difficult to prove copyright over something like dance because its not the same as a written or recorded art form (In Australia at least). Obviously, just because you can get away with it doesn't make it right! But all dance forms and routines are inspired in some way, so I think drawing a little from what you've seen and learnt is ok.
