Hmmmm Where do I start ?
Hello to you all!
I'm so glad that I have found this site!
I'm interested in starting Burlesque lessons, and would like to possibly make a career out of it! (deppending how good I am!)
The only problem that I have is my parents! I think that my Dad would be very upset to say the least! I know that i'm an adult (24) but I need some advice on how to deal with my problem!
Any tips?
Also, i'm finding it difficult to find a stage name! I've got a few ideas but struggling to decide which one to use. Should I go for Sweetie Darling or Ruby Delilah? I'm open to suggestions too!
Take care x

Hello and Welcome!!
Is it just your Dad or both parents? And have you spoke about this kind of thing with them before? Perhaps they're not sure about it because they don't know what it's all about?
As for a stage name, it took me ages to think one up! (Miss Star Dust Syron) So don't worry too much about getting one straight away! xxxxxxxxxx

Hey!
Well it's my dad really!
I think that it is the thought of his "little" girl having no clothing on in front of a crowd of people that really upsets him! ( or the fact that I have no clothing on at all!)
I haven't brought up that subject with them!
Even when the playboy bunnies are on tv, he will say that they're tarts! (and they're covered up!)
I know at the end of the day it is my choice, I am a big girl now! I just wondered if anybody else had similar experiences!

My family are all Catholics and I've told my Mum who isn't all that happy but doesn't really know much about Burlesque, so I need to try find out some interesting stuff that will make her look at it in a more positive view. My Dad on the other hand......... eeeeeek! I really don't think I'll ever tell him! He's veeeeeeeeeeery strict and I think if I told him, it would just upset him so he's better not knowing!
Its hard because you never know how they are going to react! Perhaps focus on telling them about the history and glamour of it, rather than the striptease element? Grandma's are the best, I told my Grandma all about it and she loved it! She's asked to see pics and everything!

I'm pretty lucky with regards to this, my mum loves burlesque and I have no dad around to disapprove!
You answered your own question though by saying that you are an adult. You are an adult and therefore your choices in life should be your own and you should do what you feel and what makes you happy. Do your parents have any knowledge of burlesque? If they have the wrong idea about it, maybe talking to them about it, why you want to do it and how much you would like their support in your choice would help? Just show that you respect them as your parents and don't want to upset them, but equally it is your choice and it is something you would like to do.
All the best

How about explaining burlesque as a whole, not just the nudie girls bit? The comidians and the entertainers. Just dont have to tell them which bit you're doing. And remember you dont even have to take your clothes up, thats your discression.

I just wouldn't tell them. And if they asked, i'd ambiguously state my profession as 'dancer'.
I too am an adult, but an adult with very overbearing parents.

hello, good luck with the classes.
My dad would probably go nuts if he knew I was onstage bearing what he and my mum gave me- personally I think all parents should be proud of the beautiful bodies they have created in their sons and daughters and should feel good we are showing them off. I always concentrate on the vintage and comedic side when trying to explain it to my dad. But then I grew up around Southends dirty cartoon postcards and Carry On movies so I've convinced him its a glamourous version of that. My mum on the other hand is very much a fan of burlesque herself and totally gets it.
Although after my debuting strip a few months back I've decided to do more fandancing where, although I'm in quite a burlesque costume, nothing comes off, its more about how I love to dance.

My mum originally thought burlesque was all to do with my acting training - which is fine, because that is the slant I tend to give people - I focus on the fact that the burlesque act tells a story, that it's all a bit tongue in cheek and it's about taking it off with a wink and a smile. Also I keep people's focus on the fact that I get to be creative and make my costumes.
When I told my mum and dad that I was making some ostrich feather fans, my dad mock gasped and said, "Surely not a daughter of mine", followed by, "We'll come and watch!" They know I was a model for a life drawing class - and they weren't surprised - they just seem to wonder what I'm going to do next. I don't think I can shock my parents...it's not fair!!!
