I told my mum right at the start, and she has always helped me with my costumes. But, for the first few months I was performing, I told my dad I was doing a form of 'music cabaret theatre'. He is a Christian and I just wasn't sure he'd approve. But, then he turned up at one of my shows, sitting right in the middle of the front row and got to see his eldest daughter tassel-twirling for all she was worth! He has since been to quite a few of my shows and is totally supportive.
As for the making a career out of burlesque... it's a long, difficult and expensive road. I have been performing for almost 2 years (whilst at uni) and believe me, I make nowhere near enough to live off at this stage. Burlesque is not like stripping, as many people will tell you: most of your money goes into making your next costume, so it's definitely not a get-righ quick scheme.
The UK burlesque scene has exploded over the last two years. When I joined the forums here, there were 100 members, now there are over 6000. There are probably hundreds of girls who would love to make a career out of it but you really need to work hard. Think about why you want to do it. Is it for a love of the performance itself or simply for money and glamour? Because the latter are not enough of a motivation on their own. Try to come up with an original name, that is personal to you and think about what kind of personae you wish to portray. What sort of burlesque do you want to do?
A sadly, misinterpreted word these days, it has a rich history both in the UK and abroad, both of which have influenced hugely upon the new burlesque of the 21st century. But, despite this, many modern performers remain ignorant, and a popular cultural conception of burlesque revolves around the stereotypical images of pin-up girls, nipple tassels and corsets.
Anyway, apologies for the ramble, I tend to go off on a tangent.
It's good you're enjoying your classes and there are plenty of newer, smaller-scale events which offer the chance to newer performers to take to the stage for the first time. So, once you finish your classes and set yourself up with a stage name and act, I would approach them. I hope this has been of some help anyway!
All the best,
Daiquiri xx
