    Thumbs up Shoes!

Now I've got your attention... I need some advice. I've got my first class soon, but I don't know what shoes to wear. Got heels... millions in fact but I don't know what others to take. I don't own trainers and I have a pair of split sole ballet shoes. Are they ok or should I invest in something else? I'm intending on taking this up seriously so any advice is appreciated.

If you're going to take it up professionly (well, as professional as one can become when starting out in any showbusiness) I would suggest to get used to the dance and movement first. Twirling pasties and shimmying when you're unsteady on your feet in a pair of 6" stilettos doesn't bode well! If you're just starting out, a comfortable pair of flats (that will bend okay for pointing your toes etc) are fine, or if you want to try smaller heels maybe 2". So long as you're stable and your feet won't hurt, that's great!

If you've already been dancing a while, take a pair of heels that you're comfortable dancing in. I know, not all Burlesque is done in a pair of heels but the posture you adopt when wearing them is great to get used to!

Wear flats, but take a pair of heels along with you ^___^

Cheersies. I've been dancing for quite a while (well, had a bit of a break for a year or two to be honest) , so used to medium heels. Still need practise shimmying in stilettos!

Hi Mitzi Cerise, How did your lesson go and what shoes did you decide on?

I wear heels all the time because i'm short so i'm pretty well balanced, I wear quite high black heels when I go, I figure if I can learn to balance and dance in them then any lower height heels shouldn't be a problem!

    All the best

    Thumbs up

A good pair of each black and nude character dance shoes are absolutely perfect, and will last for years. (Black is sleek, but nude gives a traditional showgirl look, not to mention creates an illusionary length to your legs drawing attention to your outfit rather than distracting.) Leather soles provide enough slide and stability, and these shoes are built to protect your ankles. Ballroom shoes are ideal because they come in a variety of styles.

You can theoretically dance in whatever you're comfortable in, but make sure you practice the routine in the shoes you plan to wear. If can-can is your dance then you definitely want your arch supported in a proper pair, but if you're just shimmying around a cheapo pair of whatever will do. If you find them too slippy take them to the cobbler and have him put a traction strip on the bottom and heel, (just a few dollars) if they're not slippy enough you can have them equiped with suede strips to aid with things like the splits - in heels if you dare.

Either or, leather heels are best for durability and wearability on stage, as they don't marr the surface your dancing on.

I have to be very careful about what I wear due to the years of abuse my feet undertook in competitive Highland dancing. I'm vary wary of inadequate support or possible sprains and strains.

Take care of your feet and invest in a good shoe. You'll thank yourself later!
