And I'm just being myself, I don't have a certain blog persona, I just write as myself.

Its your blog. Do you feel that picture displays the real you (or the you you want to show the world?

I actually like the pic you have as your avatar...

I agree - the most important thing is that you feel comfortable with how you are portrayed in the photo.
I like the image - you may not be smiling, but there is a lot going on in your eyes..
Also - you look as if you are just about to say something in the photo, which is quite apt if it is the header for a blog.

As you can see, everyone who has commented has a different view of your photo.

It's good to get feedback from others, but learn to trust your own instincts too.
Next time you have a photo shoot, try to reach a balance between the photographers vision and your own ideas / requirements.
    Best Wishes,

    Erica x

Has your photo been cropped at all? The only thing that I can see that could be improved is that your photographer has taken the very top of your head off, and as it is not a close-up and the rest of you is in the photo as well it looks like they've done it by accident. Maybe crop out the bottom a tiny little bit, to get rid of that bump (your knee) which is emerging. I am biased towards really balanced images which use space well because my art tutors are always going on about good composition in class . Parts cut off can sometimes look a bit odd.

You should use all the white space to add some text you really like, the title of your blog maybe? You yourself look absolutely fine, love the hair especially.

Hmm in my opinion as a photographer and in a constructive way, it looks a little grey and flat. The levels could do with tweeking to distinguish more between your skintone and the grey background. Or either taking it to B&W and again the contrast being tweeked. I think the tog could put a little work in and make it from an OK shot to something quite striking for you.

As someone pointed out it does depend on the look or feeling you are trying to capture. You look elegant and very pretty though, you have a gorgeous look.

I hope you dont mind, and as this is someone elses work please just take this as an example (I'd be miffed if another tog tarted up my work and then it was used lol), but I have tweeked it to show how you can give it a little more...Ooomff

    Thanks for the response, everyone!

The grey background is the white paper backdrop from the studio, and I don't think it's been cropped - my friend probably just took any pic she thought I looked good in. I'll find out later today if she's cropped and bordered it and how she's put the title and description (which is what the empty field is for.

I guess I am pretty good at trusting my instincts, the problem is to believe in myself enough to trust that I get the "right" instincts... I'm silly that way, and most of the time I'm more confident than that. I just get little dips in my self esteem. But thanks to belly dancing and mental training it's getting better and better - thus I sometimes get into this sort of mixed feelings ^^

Forums are great for this., bouncing ideas, thoughts and sometimes just getting that little bit of reassurance we need to do something. You are given advice and ideas unconditionally and from those you can make an informed decision about something.

Your self esteeem should be sky high lady, you are very photogenic and good luck with the blog

Oh I just saw what you did to the pic, I missed it earlier, and it really looks a lot better! I'll save it and show it discretely to my helping friend ^^

Kitty's version is really great! It looks a lot brighter and more striking

I like the more serious expression, i think serious often looks nicer than smiley I get fed up of people telling me i should smile!

And i love your avatar pic! Its a shame you didn't push for those red lips though, they would have finished it off really well.

I've got more issue aobut the clothing and pose.

Bent over like that isn't "inviting" or a "tease".

I.e. the little part of the knee showing at the bottom,
    or the bunched clothing...

The photographer should have sorted that out at the start..

    Great Edit above.....

The tog should have used a seperate light on the hair as it's
    not got any higlights...
