Default losing weight to begin burlesque

    Hi Everyone,

I've been interested in Burlesque for a couple of years but never made any move towards performing until now. My main problem isn't a lack of class 'es, as I am aware of a few places in my local area doing class 'es. My main problem is that I am very overweight and as a result have low confidence as well as being quite shy. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on losing weight or any activities which would help (particuarly interested in bellydancing classes in Leicester). I was considering buying a burlesque DVD but I live with my Dad and brother and I don't want them to know about it.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi Margarita,

I would highly reccomend Bellydancing. It looks gentle but its really not. An hour of that 3 times a week will do you a lot of good.

Also, its a fun way of getting fit and losing weight. Pilates or really helps to tone and strengthen muscles, and lifting weights is good for burning calories.

    Hope this helps a bit

again i too would go with bellydancing its great exercise and lots of fun...but dont feel that you have to lose weight to be accepted...if its for you then by all means, i know how that one feels hun believe me, but this isone of the very few communities to embrace the female (and male for that matter) form in all its varieties that i have ever found and is not openly sizist but very supportive...

confidence can be faked and so can selfesteem, again i have vast experience of putting on both!!!!! and you know one day you will wake up and find you dont need to fake it any more cos it will be there having just sneaked in under the radar without you even knowing it!!!!

keep your chin up babe and believe in yourself. xxxx

Thanks for the advice, it does help and I really appreciate it.

People here seem to be quite accepting and I just wish that more people were like this in general.

I think the best thing for you to do is do your recent into different perofrmers. There are performers of al shapes and sizes in the world of Burlesque . I reccomend Dirty Martini (myspace.com/dirtymartiniburlesque) to start with.

I asked the very same things when I started on the forum.... and my thread called Larger performers from 2008 may help as it had a number of recommendations about larger performers (Dirty Martini being one of the main ones) and also about the general acceptance of size etc.

Honestly, if you wish to lose weight for you then that is one thing but you don't have to lose it for burlesque and burlesque (and belly dancing is very empowering) and this is coming from a size 22 women who is 5 foot 1...

i started burlesque classes to gain confidence about my weight, i had my daughter and went from a size 10-18!!....im now down to a 14-16 and feel more confident then ever.... burlesque is not about been super slim, its about showing how beautiful a female body is, regardless of its shape or size...i personally prefer to see the curvier women perform...altho there are some lovely slimmys out there also....women are meant to be curvey... (according to my biology teacher years and years ago *ample boobies sends signals to males that you are more than capable to feed a child, and larger hips suggest to men you can easily bear children*........whether this is true or not i dont know, but he resembled the weetos scientist in more ways than one haha!!!

perhaps try going to a self confidence class instead if confidence is your main problem xxx

All I will say is: Never put something off for 'when I've lost weight'. Life is for living RIGHT NOW and we mustn't miss a minute of it!

Never look back on your life with regret for all the things you never did, so wear those clothes you've never dared to, go to places you always wanted to, and mostly, get your sexy ass to a class pronto! You'll be very glad you did! X

I completely, and wholeheartedly agree with this!! I recently wrote about my experience with weight loss (I've lost 5 stone) and the entire time I was putting things of until I was slimmer - it meant the whole while I was loosing weight I was miserable, and didn't feel good enough. Then when I got to my goal, I still felt miserable!
Fall in love with yourself as you are right now, sure, loose weight if you want to - But size truly doesn't matter. Pamper yourself right this minute, make yourself feel glamorous right this second, that way, both the journey AND the goal will be all the sweeter
Take it from a girl who knows!

Much love and best of luck
    xxx
