At Delicious on 31st July in Derby, there is a rare opportunity to attend two MoB Approved workshops:
Branding Your Burlesque Persona
5.30pm - 6.30pm @ Delicious
Tickets £15 from State of The Art Promotions Limited Delicious Burlesque Workshop Places
Beatrix Says:
This workshop is aimed at performers with over 1 years experience, looking to learn more about the business side of their performance work. I outline exactly what branding is, and show individuals how branding affects one’s burlesque career. I go on to assess how each performer can take control and develop their own branding in order to strengthen their employability. I touch upon the influence of elements such as websites, promotional materials (including promotional blurbs), performance repertoire, burlesque-personality and introducing yourself to new bookers/promoters/agents. This is a fun, interactive and thought-provoking workshop, focusing on theory rather than practice.
Beatriz supplies: 1 hour presentation, take-away flyer.
Participants supply: nothing (you may wish to bring a notepad and pen to take additional notes)
Participants take away: A flyer (and their own notes)
Bra Embellishment
2.30pm - 4.30pm @ Delicious
Tickets £20 from State of The Art Promotions Limited Delicious Burlesque Workshop Places
Beatrix Says:
Have you ever wanted to learn new techniques for customising your own burlesque costumes? Whilst this workshop focuses on bras, participants will learn valuable techniques (such as how to attach non-elastic trims to elasticated costumes) that can be applied to many other costume elements besides.
Beatrix supplies: A flyer, embellishments (sequins, appliques, rhinestones, ribbons), needles, thread, rhinestone glue etc.
Participants supply: a bra to customise (a tshirt bra is ideal - try to bring something simple).
Participants take away: Any embellishments participants have used or started to stitch and a flyer.
2 - KITTIE KLAW
FREE workshop by Ministry of Burlesque's Kittie Klaw
As a fantastic addition to the Delicious event schedule, we would like to announce that legendary UK performer & Ministry of Burlesque founder Kittie Klaw will be hosting an exclusive INTERACTIVE BURLESQUE WORKSHOP, specially devised for Delicious guests.
The workshop will be completely FREE OF CHARGE, and will run from 4.30 till 6.30 pm. If you could like a place on this workshop, all you need to do is put your name down on the day, on arrival at the main event reception desk - places are limited though so will be allocated on a first come first served basis. This replaces the previously advertised burlesque beginners tuition workshop.
The aim of this workshop is to educate participants on the wide and varied genre of burlesque and to have a play with the ideas and methods of burlesquing. From gender-bending to exaggerated femininity we will examine the power behind the clever use of stereotypes, archetypes and ideals which burlesque theatre is based on.
Divided in to three sections:
· Burlesque in Briefs - A Short History of the Genre and it’s Styles
- Q & A discussion about roles, styles and influence in the modern scene.
· The Role of Female Sexuality and Gender Roles in Burlesque
- Q & A discussion about women in the lead roles, power and exploitation - Practical demo and activity on how to make the most of what you’ve got. This section plays with methods of physical illusion and presentation of the female form.
· Playing with Stereotypes, Archetypes and Ideals
- Practical demo and activity on lampooning and burlesquing. This section plays with gender-bending, satirising and exaggeration of sexy attributes.
The workshop is suitable for either male or female participants, and it is recommended that comfortable clothing and footwear is worn.

Hi Ant,
There are plenty of ways to learn
Just as with female performers, you want to find your niche by experimenting with what you are drawn too and developing your natural strengths. These might be singing, comic acting, clowning, dancing or some novelty skill.
To burlesque , is to send something up through exaggeration and lampooning so have a play with some ideas and put an act together. It's then a matter of practice, stage time and trying new classes and ideas.
You can incorporate anything you like, anything that helps send up your subject - drag, magic, props, shtick, stripping ...
One of my favourite burlesque acts of all time were a male act - The Western Brothers;
The Western Brothers
- 'The Old School Tie' is just a superb burlesque.
Some videos online:
THE WESTERN BROTHERS - British Pathe
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1VYGAHY7Q4"]YouTube - The Western Brothers sing "In The Parlour When The Company's Gone" 1932[/ame]
Of course this is a very specific style - it's burlesque act in the traditional sense but these brothers were styled with an 'aristocratic irony' - this was their image and niche.
The world is your creative oyster...
If you feel you'd like to work with an expert male voice coach, acting mentor, drag coach or experienced male burlesquer, just let me know and I can put you in touch with the right people.Last edited by Kittie; 06-15-2010 at 11:46 PM.
