Default Curls?

How do you guys curl your hair?

I want curls that are not too tight, but still a bit ringletted.

Should I use rollers (I tried rags but the ringlets were too tight)

And do I need setting lotion? What exactly is this, and where to get it?

Any advice or links to tutorials would be appreciated.

xxxxxxx

I used to pin curl my hair religiously before bed only to go out in the damp the next morning and watch all the curls fall out! a wet set left to dry overnight was the only thing that worked though, tongs did nothing.

I got most of my tips from here

Nocturne.com :: Vintage Hairstyles

Now I have hair a bit like Noel Fielding and love it, I randomly chop the back bits off and let the fringe grow long, probably the least burlesque hairstyle.

I use pin curls. I prefer using tongs but it wrecks my hair. If you make the curl bigger when using pin curls they are not as tight. If you make sure that your hair isn't too wet (and it's not a cold night!) they should dry before morning. But wrap your head up in a bandana and try (if possible!) to not toss and turn too much otherwise the curls come out funny. Pin curls are on the nocturne site.

I use babyliss thermoceramic rollers. I don't think I would be dextrous enough to do much more.

A wet set is probably the best thing though. Use plain old foam rollers when your hair is wet and leave them in overnight. Be warned that if your hair is fine the small rollers are a complete no-no - you'll end up looking like Brian May and won't be able to put a comb through the curls without reducing it to frizz. Very 80s, not burlesque!

I can't curl my own hair, cut it yes, curl it no!

I recommend going to an old ladies hairdressers (the sort where they do blue rinses and have the big static spaceman type hairdryers) and getting them to do it for you.

Alternatively, you could try GHD curls.

I have naturally wavy/curly hair but do love to 'set' my curls for a more glam look.
Tongs are ok once in a while coz they damage your hair. Pin curls are good if you do as everyone has recommended. Worth mentioning that your curls are a lot softer feeling using pin curls or rags compared to tonging them.
I am thinking of buying Remington's Envy Lock 'n' Roll. They claim you can get big bouncy curls.
Happy curling x

I too have very naturally curly hair: -

for curls I just scrunch with mousse and blow-dry with a diffuser (v.80's Bonnie-tyler-wannabe!)

for ringlets I have to blowdry straight (depending on how well behaved my hair's being I sometimes have to straighten as well! Use heat protection spray!) and when the hair's cooled, use tongs

for my vintage-y hair-styles I sprinkle setting lotion over damp hair (you can buy it really cheap from superdrug) brush it through and rough blow-dry straight-ish. Then I use large heated rollers to create big bouncy curls but I often put my hair into curls or victory rolls at the sides and leave the back bouncy and loose in a rockabilly style.

I can't do pincurls, I can't get the hang of them - I've followed the tutorials and watched the videos and my hair just doesn't want to do it! Sigh.
