Making Garters
I want to have a go at making my own garters; I understand basically how they work, but I was wondering if anyone had any useful tips? For example, whats the best material to use so that they stay held in place?

I was thinking of using elastic, but I thought it might slip too easily... Hmm, i'll have to do some trials I think. I can let you know how it goes if you like, blond fatale

I've made some very simple ones out of ribbon and elastic and they stay up just fine. I can even put a wooden stake and cross into them and they hold them up (yes it was for an act, I don't just carry vampire-killing equipment every day). I couldn't get one to keep a Zippo in place though, I think it was too shiny and heavy ...

I'm yet to try it, but I've been thinking about the possibility of having grippy silicon like that on "stay-up" stockings on the inside of the garter to help it stay up without giving me the dreaded sausage-link thigh look.
The basic process, though, would be to get the right length of elastic to go round your thigh and stay there (with about a cm or so extra for the join), stretch it out as much as you can and sew (with a zig zag stitch) your lace or ribbon or whatever decoration you want to it while it it stretched. Then when you let it go it will contract back and the ribbon/lace will be all ruffly. Then you join the ends together.
Sewing the elastic while holding it stretched is a little tricky to start with but you'll soon get the hang of it.
The bit where you join the ends might be a little messy. If I'm lazy I just turn that so it's on the inside of my thigh where it's less noticeable, but you could decorate that bit with a bow or brooch or something to hide the join.

I did that - but I sewed the elastic together first and then stretched the loop around a huge pile of books to keep it taut ^_^

I've "made" some in a hurry before, out of already decorated elastic. You can find some nice ones! And all you need to do is sew the ends together. Yay!

Yay thanks to Fleur telling me how I have almost finished my first home made garter!
Its super ruffly as I used a whole 1.5 meters of ribon on it (crazy I know).
I also ordered one from Mia von mink which is lovley.
I shall post a pic of my home made one when I am finished. Just needed a break as I have hand stitched it all and my eyes have gone all fuzzy hehe. Just a lil more work though, putting a thin layer of white ribbon around the middle...must...keep....stitching...
*Hugs*
