Default burlesque style photos.....

Hi i need help please

I have just finished making a burlesque style costume for my college course and now need to take photos of it to get printed for my portfolio for a interview i have in two weeks time. unfortunately i cant use the photography studio in college so i was just wondering what type of environment i should take the photos in so the background works well with it. And also what types of pose's i should ask my model to try and do....

thanks in advance

If you're trying to make the outfit the focal point (which I'm guessing is the whole object, making it look as good as possible) then if I were you I'd go for a pretty plain background but in a good contrasting colour.

What is the main colour of the outfit? What colour would it stand out best against?

Does your college have a hall with a stage? Or does your student union have a stage? And most importantly have they got curtains that you can draw behind the models so you can make it look like a performance? Or do you know a friend or family's house that has long plain heavy curtains in a colour that would make your outfit stand out?

Personally I'd try and go for making it look like it's a performance rather than trying to make it look a studio pic. So I'd go with a plainish background - but preferably curtains or a plain painted background and a few props to give some atmosphere to your pics. So what about a feather boa or a parasol or something. But keep it simple so your outfit is the main star of the photos.

I wouldn't worry about not being able to use the photography studio - the main consideration really is lighting. If you have some, or whoever is taking the photos has some then fantastic - you can get some really good indoor shots.

However, if you haven't try and get out on a not too sunny, not too rainy day - the light today where I live is great for photos.

As for poses - check out some of the photo albums of Candee Photography or Cherry Bomb Rock Photography's pics for tons of inspiration.

Good luck!

You can create your own pseudo-studio using lengths of fabric hung from a curtain rail. Snap the photographs against those and then edit the background in Photoshop to make it look like a full, professional backdrop. x

the outfit is a red and black underbust corset with lots of material stars spotted about the busts and shoulders with black frilly pants and a black and red net bustle type skirt that just covers the back with big red feathers.... so i think it needs to be quite a light coloured background for it to stand out,

i hadnt thought about the stage and trying to make it look like a performance i like that idea alot thankyou! i also like the photo in your avatar so might try a few shots outside if i cant find a stage i can you, ive thought it may look good near a church door too...

@Beatrix Von Bourbon, im not to sure on how to use photoshop and havent realy got time to learn as i didnt think it was possible for me to get an interview this year i thought i would have to wait until next but found out last minute last night and have quite alot of other things to prepare for it lol

thankyou both for your help

Most of my outfits are red and black and they look fantastic with a green background

Doing an outdoors shoot in a wood or even against the backdrop of a green hedge at this time of year makes trying to the lighting right so much easier

(but if it were me I would try and make it look like up on a stage)

me and my bloke are in no way professionals - but the avatar pic (and there are some more in my album if you click on my name to get to my profile) we managed to get in a nearby wood
