I have a Manic Panic 40 vol lightening kit, which Im told will do it effectively, although I will end up with orange hair, will this matter if Im going to dye it over the top? I dont want to be blonde,I just dont want black hair anymore!
If anyone has managed it,please help me with your advice. Thankyou sweeties.Laura.xxx

Go to a salon. They can safely lift it. Then have them dye it with a permanent colouring system, a brand called "Elumen" by a company called Goldwell. Outstanding results. Go on a google-fest (granted, the Elumen site is frustratingly designed and I hate it, but you'll see how intense their stuff is. And it's soooo good for your hair!!!!!!!!)

sorry to say but manic panic is the worst hair dye iv used and iv been dyeing it pink/red for about 9 years.
it doesnt colour well to start with plus it washes out straight away. is just a overall rubbish dye

rusk is a fab make though, but red washes out much quicker than pink.

I have my hair pink, and its easy to cover even if your hair doesn't go white it covers really well.
As others have said get a good shampoo and conditioner. I would definately recommend aussie moisture soak, in shampoo, conditioner, and 3 minute miracle mask. Also the leave in conditioner is very good. Plus its not too expensive.
good luck.

Not to confuse you further, but it also depends on what condition your hair is already in and what type of hair you have, i.e. naturally dark hair tends to be thicker in texture and can take a bit more punishment than fair hair.
If you can't afford to go to a salon, get a pre-lightening kit that has an after-treatment conditioner with it (like most commercial 'normal' colour hair-dyes) cuz this will minimise the damage from lightening and prepare your hair for the new colour.
There is also a range of (permanent, I think) hair-dyes available (in the UK at least) called Smart Colour, available from most larger Superdrug stores, or online at Boring hair? fancy a change colour change try smart hair color
It works by lightening the hair and colouring it in one go, and works on dark (and dyed) hair too (I went from chocolate brown to bright cherry red!!!!) It lasts for quite a while too (between 6 and 10 weeks, depending on your hair, plenty of time between top-ups.)

PInk hair!
I just tried Smart Colour on my roots after being unable to track down the LIVE colour I was after. It looked good when I put it on ...but the colour washed out as soon as I rinsed it, leaving my roots lightened, but not really pink...more peachy! I had to scrape the last of my directions out to top up the roots colour!
LIVE Wild lights colour works by the same theory ( lightens and colours in one step) and I've had success with it...much easier then trying to bleach only your roots! You can get it on ebay!
This is the colour of my hair just now BTW...( photo courtesy of Tallulah) using LIVE colour red-violet

Sorry I don't know how to link it properly...

When I was 16 I tried dying my dark brown hair pink. Needless to say, it didn't work. Went a bright red colour for about a week then ended up matching my dad's terracotta sofa perfectly!
I know I should have lightened it first but didn't hav the nerve and ended up dying it black and keeping it that way

ullo!
I went from black to green, but I had to bleach a few times to get it light enough.
My hair is in shocking condition now, but it's the price you pay for colour...

I was told that there was still too much residual dye at that stage, and they advised me to strip as much of the dye out of my hair as possible, using high-grade clarifying shampoo.
Alas, in the end I lost my nerve and decided against changing my hair colour.

Beatrix, would you mind telling me what clarifying shampoo you used? I think we have exactly the same black hair dye issues!kisses.xxxx
