My clothes caused a stir at work
I am quite new, but I have to share my experience of the last couple of days to see if anyone has experienced similar.
I lecture in a college and usually wear jeans and hoodies to work, sometimes trousers and I tend to wear dresses in the summer. I take a casual approach to work attire.
This week I decided to give an outing to my wiggle skirt, little black cardigan and shines mary janes. I even did make up and hair.
It seems that people at work have found this facinating and I am the subject of much gossip, including:-
1) I am having job interviews elsewhere
2) I am trying to impress someone
3) I am trying to get a promotion
4) I have lost my mind
Option 4 seems to be the most popular.
Either way, I am finding it most amusing as I know the only reason I dressed like that was for me!
Think I might do jeans on monday then skirt on tuesday and wednesday, jeans on thurs . . . . that'll really confuse them!
Anyone else get gossiped about?WARNINGWarning: This is an Old Thread

I get that too- I wear waist cinchers under my clothes so whenever I'm typing at my desk I get the ''is she isn't she'' conversations

I also have become the unofficial font of all knowledge on anything remotely vintage inspired which amuses me.
After pinning my latest tattoo inspiration to my notice board last week my boss asked me quietly ''Do you think its an addiction <insert understanding nod>'' PMSL!

I found that being a young female working in a large office (especially when I was a blonde) dressing nicely was suicide - I got a lot of bullying on nights out from girls with comments suggesting i loved myself/was a slut/thought i owned the place. Personally I was oblivious to the fact that I stood out - I just got up in the morning and put my clothes on - the irony was that i think by the time these girls had straightened their hair to within and inch of its life and shaved off their eyerbrows and drawn them back on again they'd probably spent a good hour longer than i getting ready for work.
I now put a lot more thought into what I wear to work and end up wearin black trousers and dark shirts, i don't feel like myself at all but it makes my life a lot easier.

God, that's one of my favourite (but at the same time least favourite) phrases. It usually does seem to be applied because of someone's clothes, too. It doens't even mean anything!!! :wallbash:
Well as I'm skint and still trying to get some more vintage style stuff together, and as I've been an art student for the last 6 years and tended to get paint on absolutely everything (I sat in a big paint splodge once and it went right through my jeans to my underwear
), I never had the chance to dress up for college. We all got to look a bit smarter on our trip to Venice, but that mostly involved fitting as many layers as possible under our coats while still being able to walk. While we were there, I walked past a bar with some of my friends, and two women from our course came outside. They were both really dressed up but in a hippy kind of way (I suppose topshop call it 'boho' hehe) and looked great, but my friend (one of the bitchiest straight men I've ever met) looked in disgust and said "mutton dressed as lamb."
The same person though, at our degree show, went around telling all the girls how they should have dressed up all the time for college (I had a dress and my "high class prostitute tights" (seamed stockings) on). Because, you know, that would have been really practical....

if you normally wear jeans and hoodies they were probably just surprised to see you looking so different and they were most likely wishing they were dressed as nice! i only dress nicely and wear dresses and heels if i am going out, i really can't be bothered trying to look nice when i go to college. although in the summer i make more of an effort to do my hair and makeup and wear something pretty, i just can't get up in the winter to de-ming myself i feel so crap and tired so i end up having only 15 minutes to get dressed :worried:

In my experience no opportunity should ever be missed to mess with the heads of the office gossips - I offer my wholehearted encouragement!

Ah the narrow minded jealous brigade strikes again . That's horrible and you shouldn't have had to put up with it - did your employer never do anything about the antics of this bunch of charmers?

I work as a school librarian and ALWAYS dress up for work. I wear pencil skirts, fishnets, heels (always), cute little cardis, sweet dresses (never trousers), and always do my mak-up. Everyone is used to me now and I hope it has inspired others at work to make a teeny bit more effort. So many girls seem to be lured into the 'oh it's only work so doesn't really matter' brigade it's sad. Every day should be an occasion to dress up.
The kids at my school love it and often make nice comments about my shoes or dress and I have never had any negativity from other staff. I look smart, professional and...different (a little bit anyway!!).
I think that instead of dress down Friday we should have 'DRESS-UP FRIDAY' where EVERYONE is encouraged to make a bit more effort at least once a week.
Of course when I get home I slip on something comfy and take my face off!
I say GO FOR IT. Don't be affected by negative comments or let others dictate how you should dress. You will probably find that if you stick with it, it will inspire others to follow suit.
GOOD LUCK
kisses

I've periodically made a stir at work with my clothes - apparently a utilikilt is considered to be odd attire in Sheffield - dunno why

I had a uniform at work - but the longer I was there the more I dressed it up! I wasn't allowed to accessorise much with jewellery of anything, so I used pretty hairslides and grips to tie my hair back (a requirement). It took me a while to get a uniform that actually fitted, but I was happy when I did. We were allowed to wear our own trousers or skirts (management turned a blind eye as long as they were smart and black) so I wore a pencil skirt and seamed stockings. They got me plenty of comments, usually good, from customers mainly - the workmates weren't fussed, they'd seen me turn up in a variety of crazy outfits so they were used to it by then! The one comment I got that slightly bugged me was the day I turned up after seeing friends and couldn't be bothered to change my usual make up to the toned down version I wore at work. So my friend asked me why I had my 'prossie red' lipstick on! He was only playing, but I was shocked nonetheless ...
