Lisa - I will if I get up early enough!
I am suprised how much people let other people get to them. I went to a girls' school and am more than aware of how nasty other females can be. I think that this is one of the reasons that I tend to ignore negative comments or just try and play with people's minds (I guess that may be because of my subject).
I truly believe that most people are like that out of jealousy, either because they want to look as good as you or because they wish they had the guts to dress like that. Over the summer I went to a fancy dress party as a rock chick and wore jeans that I wore when I was 13, I am 31 now. They were skinny and looked terrible in my opinion! I was also caked in make up, not in a good way. . . My boss got very very drunk, came up to me and slurred, "It's ok if you're foxy, isn't it?". Her tone was not one of friendliness. This just confirmed that people are nasty because they are envious, the irony is that she is VERY foxy, she just doesn't see or feel it I guess!
If people make you feel uncomfortable just remember why they are doing that - because you look great!
I just bought a new skirt for this week. . . . . confusion rules !

I always think this is sad. My best friend is quite similar too- she's very quick to judge (and she admits this, and realises that it is because of jealousy) yet she is absolutely beautiful!
She just doesn't see it so judges others who dare to look "prettier" than her.Snowflakes and Sparkles

I get the impression that this behaviour tends to come about among women because we are not used or encouraged to think about ourselves as beautiful, or even attractive even if we are by other people's standards. Women who have lovely slender figures tend to want to be curvy, and women with the nice curves that they envy are busy feeling like Nellie the Elephant after a Ben and Jerry's binge and wishing that they had gorgeous sleek figures and could wear more or less any clothes they like!
It's insane and it's nasty but unfortunately I can't see it changing until women actually learn to love the face and body that they actually see in the mirror, rather than beating themselves up because it's not like Dita 's/ Kate Moss's/ Jessica Alba's etc.

I love to get dressed up and often wear smart fitted dresses/skirts/fishnets to work and am never without my red lippy. i was amused on a course recently to hear that red lipstick signals 'I want sex now'. I thought about feeling horrified at the signal i'm sending then thought, actually, its often true! Just not with the morons who judge me by my ruby lips alone...
I think it's a great thing to put a bit of glamour into the workplace. You are so right though - until people out there really feel their own beauty it is easier to pick holes in other people. x

i think you have the right attitude and style here!! i would love going back to how i like to dress at work but it really really isn't worth being bullied over. i know i should rise above it and ignore it but its difficult when you have drunk girls all up in your face having a go at you and there's nooooooooo escape - i shall avoid being in this situation as much as possible!!

i think it is horrible some of the things that you girls have had to experience because you dress a certain way  how are pencil skirts and tea dresses slutty/inappropriate?! when i do make the effort and wear my red lipstick and dresses i have only ever had compliments from people, although im sure plenty have bitched behind my back lol! do these people that make these nasty remarks not think how upset they would be if someone else was being that way to them? and to the original poster i think it is cool that you have been making an effort, i sometimes have a hard job trying to distinguish the lecturers from students when im in college lol

lol Kittie . In my lesson observation last week the observer said he thought I was a student! Anyone think that's why I got a grade 1?

That is properly odd that anyone could think a tea dress slutty, it's one of the most demure items a girl could wear.
Schoolchildren are the only people I've ever had nasty comments from-actually apart from the odd lad who yells out "ginger" at me (what like I hadn't noticed after all this time?!), by teenagers I mean girls. Apparently my cloche is particularly hysterical.
Workwise I've always had good responses to my style. I do wonder this is partly the nature of the people I've worked with who are either a) middle aged men b)quiet artistic type teenagers c)IT geeks or d)traditionalists and the elderly. I'm another big fan of wearing red lipstick whatever, and to be fair I imagine that some of the people who take red lipstick to be a come on are possibly the same people who take a mere 'hello' as a come on too!
And completely ditto what Kittie Noir said, yay for you dressing up Faster Pussycat. I really like seeing lecturers in uni/college dressed up. I think vintage style seems appropriate to academia sort of sassy librarian (that and befuddled professor style of which my local uni has one rather fine male example).
