By chance I came across a useful little blog page, containing simple instruction and step-by-step illustrations for several types of rolls and fringes from a '40s guide. Have a look as it helped me.

All this time I've been doing a sculptured curl rather than a pin curl!

I found a girl had put a pretty good tutorial on youtube...

YouTube - Reverse Hair Rolls - Quick Tutorial

There're both short and long versions, I believe that's the quick one.

Not to be pernickity, but the instructions most definitely are the right way around.

I've managed to find a pdf of the full book that I think those instructions were taken from. Either way it's a very useful book! 1940's Hair Guide

The Daniella Turudich book (usually found massively overpriced on eBay) is simply a modern re-hash of Creative Hairshaping and Hairstyling You Can Do by Ivan of Hollywood plus bits from other period hairstyling books.

We found the original on Abe Books for a fraction of the price of the Turudich version. It's still out there if you search for it.

Other useful books of the time are Creative Hairstyling by Alfred Morris and Hair Design and Color by Ashley and Stevenson.

It's great, however, that the Turudich book is finally on line for free as the prices for copies were getting ridiculous.
