I think there were varions on the 'illusion of stockings' theme - i just know that was my grandmothers preferred approach!

As for leg silkiness, i have no idea what the history of depilation is - did ladies shave their pins in the
    1940's?

My history teacher, a fifty-three year old man, proper tweed suits and very strict kind of guy, was explaining about the painting on of stockings during the war and he had his leg up on the desk and was tracing the line of a seam down the back of his leg. I was absolutely KILLING myself laughing, but obviously silently!

Ah... the wonderful serpent hold ups.. I saw a lady wearing them on Friday night at the Torture Garden party.. Don't suppose it was yourself?

Thank you for all your responses! I wasn't aware that there were so many places in Sheffield that stocked hold up back seamed stockings!

As for Primark, I have seen the back seamed tights, but not the hold up's :-(

I'm finding it bloomin' hard to sexily strip off these gravy browning ones tho....

Seriously, retro styled black sheer RFT stockings are the things I find the most difficult to source in XL. I love companies who think women stop at size 16 (if not the ones who think once you get bigger than size 14 you explode with a puff of smoke never to trouble their salesteams again).

I can get great fishnets, lace-topped holdups etc. but just having difficulty finding something in a nice fit for 18-22s that looks authentic for vintage photoshoots

Alas the sepent-legged lady at Torture Garden wasn't me - though i have been no to frequent their 'do's' on occasion, and i hope to go to the skin too event in September

Tempest - have you looked for 'Opera' sizing in stockings? I believe these are fashioned for ladies of a Rubenesque figure. I think i have seen them available through the website affiliated to Dita von Teese , but a google search may come up trumps for you!
I have the opposite problem - a very short inside leg makes it incredibly difficult to find stockings that are not too long!

    Goodl Luck!

I love seamed hold-ups, what katie did's are great and stay up all day, but sometimes I find they sag at the knee a bit.

I love jonathan aston's where the seam is a wavy ribbon that ends with a bow at the ankle, they're very cute and eyecatching.

My current favourites are the La Perla seamed hold-ups where the seam is a corset ribbon detail up the back in pink ribbon. They're beautiful, but too expensive to justify buying, unless you can convince someone to buy them for your birthday.

    xx

I love the idea of being able to call myself Rubenesque! Thanks Violet and Kittie (I had seen the What Katie Did proper vintage ones and have been saving up for a pair)

Brains zooms off on a tangent - opera stockings meet burlesque : it's not over until the fat lady pings...
