Default Wanting to make a skirt.

Im wanting to make a skirt but I'm not too sure on what fabric would be best for it. Im still hunting for patterns i like.

I have found some blue and white striped poly cotton that is 43" wide. I have an idea that i want to sew in some under skirts, i have a detachable one i bought separately from of the dolly dresses I have. This time i want to encorporate it into the piece.

I have always wanted to make a skirt or a dress, seeing as i have just bought a black and white (spotted) body, i want a skirt to go with it, but i cant find a fabric i like and that will go with it... I have just realised im looking at striped fabric to go with a spotty item, balls...back to the drawing board.

when you find a pattern you like check the back of the pattern packet as they often give you recommendations of material types which aresuitable for making it up...butterick and vogue do some very retro patterns and also i think it is butterick that have a range that is original patterns reproducedfor todays sizes. xxx

Hey dont knock stripes and spots! Hell bunny have just released a range of stripe and spot dresses and they look totally awesome. it certainly looks better than a top with large polka dots with a skirt with a totally different size spot on it- it can be so hard to get a perfect match on these things!

Go you for getting creative and giving it a go- my top tip for making clothes is ALWAYS use the right colour thread- dont make do just because its on the inside or something- cutting corners tends to show up like a sore thumb- if youre already spending say, 5 hours making a skirt, its worth the extra hour for having something your proud to wear!

Good luck- post up some pics when youve mastered it!

I have been bad.... I didnt buy a pattern, i just went out and bought the fabric and i have begun to make it. I got a nice bright red fabric, i think its like a fine cotton.
I have pleated the top so it hangs a bit better and i plan to make a net underskirt to make it 'poof' out a bit.

I made alot of clothes for my A LEVEL and GCSE fashion course, so i can just remember what i need to do. Shame i dont have a sewing machine, but it means i have a little project to do. Because i dont have a machine, im doing so many rows of stitching, just incase one falls apart when i wear it. Im goog at sewing but its just my paranoia and fear of those dreams you have when your in public naked

I have some authentic Navy uniform buttons for the front, cant decide how i want to place them though. Either four down the left handside (a bit like where a kilt is fastened) orrrr in the centre, two on the left and two on the right.

Some friends have told me to make braces for it with the stacks of fabric i have left, but i dont know whether they would be appropriate really. (I bought 4m x 1m of it....i wanted to have more than less..im a size 14/16)

I got matching red thread Desetorchidcorsets and i have black, white, yellow and green for some little patterns i want to put on it. I was toying with the idea of doing an anchor on the bottom (match my tattoo) or a teapot, but im undecided so far, i will wait till i am finished.

It sounds like you are making a lovely item! Sometimes it is good just to go for it. I spend so much time on the business side of fashion I don't get to create and am rusty

I have finally finished. I wore it today (taking along a needle and thread just incase) and went to my brothers shop (my dad and mum are always there) to get their opinion. I love it and it exactly what i wanted. My brother said it looked good and the lad who works for him said it looked good, but my parents werent there, but i was going to their for tea.
I went and both said it looked really good and i should be proud...then it followed "...it does look good, your brother and Tom said it looked like you had wrapped a towel around your waist." So now im scared to wear it. I will upload pictures when my camera has charged...but the comment has completly knocked my confidence wearing it.

Sorry to hear what your brother and his colleague said, but don't let it upset you too much. If you like it, esp. if you put some effort into it, wear it. Your parents might be the better judges as they'd probably be less likely to let you walk around in it without warning you if it didn't look right.
