Default Burlesque fashion for Thyroid!

**Tickets now on sale from www.burlesquefashionshow.co.uk ***

A bevy of burlesque Beauties will say ‘knickers to thyroid disease’ this autumn in Leeds, at a charity fashion show in aid of the organisation Thyroid-Disease.Org.Uk

The Awesome Autumn Burlesque Fashion Show will be held on Sunday the 5th October from 7pm until midnight, in the fashionable Victoria Quarter in the heart of the Leeds during Leeds Shopping Week.

Burlesque and thyroid disease may not seem to be an obvious mix but the event aims to use burlesque with its celebration of the female form to help empower and boost the body confidence of those patients whose self-esteem has been knocked by the illness. Thyroid disease affects one in four of the population, mainly women, causing hair loss, both on head, face and body, extreme weight gain or loss, changes in skin texture, depression, infertility, as well as conditions such as thyroid cancer, and can lead to lack of self esteem and sociophobia.

In addition to the fashion show, the event will also feature performances from some of the area’s leading burlesque dancers and alternative entertainers for a fun packed evening.
Hosted by Liz Green of BBC Radio Leeds, the event features fabulous raffle prizes to be had as well.
Tickets are £8 for concessions, £10 ordinary and £15 for VIP available from various outlets in Leeds.

Great to bring awareness for this! As a burlesquer with underactive thyroid I love that the two have been joined together - just wish I could've performed!hehe

hmm interesting wherever there is a group of women a large propoortion will have it, which is why we decided to do a little sposnorship of the LBF this year. The thyroid organisation is actually mine I set it up in feb 06 after i had taken several yearsto get diagnosed and realsied how many people were either undiagnosed or undermedicated.

It was listed as the 3rd most fatal illness in the western world in 2003, after heart disease which it causes, and cancer which it has a component of, but because it is perceived as a female problem and fat ones at that isn't taken seriously as it isn't sexy and any celebs that have it don't shout about it. The president of teh British Thyroid fountation actually said on record at a GMC hearing against a doctor who was getting folks well, that they won't advise reducing the guidelines in line with other countries so that more folks get well because we get free presciptions so woudl cost the NHS too much money. I added up and it cost the country about 80K not to diagnose me for 3 years (I would have been treated straight away in teh US with my test results) which is just scandalous

If anyone does want to do any fundraising at any other time for us under the 'knickers to thyroid disease' tagline then just lmk, teh middle of october is thyroid awareness week and we are aiming to continue raising teh profile as it is appalling the way we are treated as hypochondriacs . I'm trying to get a lingerie collection together to raise funds as well to launch at the show

You'll be assured of a warm welcome at Thyroid-Disease.org.uk as well we have a lovely friendly helpful forum and you may find out things your doc hasn't told you most there have

i got diagnosed at 17 with hypothyroidism...luckily my dr is excellent and said he was surprised to see it in me so young...
however, he did also comment that with my results some drs would prob not treat me as they were borderline
bearing in mind i had gained weight, couldnt get out of bed, was falling asleep in lectures...and was getting very low and depressed
Im lucky i have a great dr...blood tests every 6 months to check levels and readjust meds if needed...

Yes i get free prescriptions but i hardly need anything...the goverments excuse is putting peoples lives and wellbeing at risk...lets face it i wouldnt have held down a full time job the way i was...so if i was treated i could have paid the tax and that would have more than covered any prescription i got!!

But definantley more awareness is needed!!!

good job!!!

yes that's trouble there wouldn't be as much of a need for IVF, antidepressants, blood pressure meds, statins etc either you are lucky you have a great doc many don't. read this and be appalled, I'm one of the intial women mentioned !! and her tagline is my phrase as we suggested she write it adn I beleive that's how they treat us for the most part
http://www.onmedica.com/BlogView.asp...2-579a5b4806e5

My doc was great too but leeds has the widest of the ref ranges in the UK and he wasn't allowed to treat me several docs who do are hauled up before the GMC and struck off. In the end after having to give up work for a while with serious dementia symptoms and unable to walk most days and countless tests for residual problems it had caused, (polyps on my womb due to the knock effect on my hormones, bladder scans etc as not detoxing so getting damaged) and paying for private extra tests the NHS wouldnt' do as I knew the range had been droppd in the US I went out of area and was finally treated

it's not treated seriously once you are diagnosed by a lot either as you want die instantly if you miss your meds, and unlike diabetes and other long term conditions, diet and lifestyle mamangement isn't discussed. it is covered under the DDA if you have problems at work though so worth bearing that in mind and keep an eye on female hormone levels and B12, folic acid and ferritin levels as they can drop as we can have absorption issues, they need to be 3/4 of ref range to be well

we want to set up a centre in leeds with management programmes and support groups to roll out to members who want to set one up in their area and publish leaflets on various problems it causes such as heart health, infertility, mental health etc and teh money raised will go towards doing all that. We need about 100K to do all we want to do and none of us are getting paid to run it atm. We've recently received just under 2k as a grant to revamp teh website but so many are competing for grants these days haven't managed any more yet and have been told it's not a priority for Leeds PCT to help us !! so on our own. we aren't yet a charity as we haven't earned enough and can't afford to be due to the cost of doing the paperwork so every little helps

we will be selling teh raffel tickets online and have some great prizes, from keda Breezes dvd to books by Gok wan, styel consultations, la magia voucher etc etc so keep watching the site and please help spread teh word

I had tests for everything under the sun for years but it wasn't till I moved and changed doctors that they picked up the under active thyroid! I just went from being a teenage (sleeping a lot), to a student (sleeping a lot) and so on - I just thought it was normal until my doc told me I had one of the most under-active thyroids she or any of the other doctors at the practice had ever seen! I do seem to be better now, but I think I just have the habit of sleeping a lot now which is incredibly hard to break!
