Where does a Neo Burlesque Perfomer go?
Howdy world
Ok, I've just been unleashed from my degree of contemporary theatre and choreographic practices (oooo....ahhh...)
And I have a few acts are well little bit different from the average eg a psychedelic bunny, hobo kitty a wife walking out on a her husband,un-educated witch... are to name but few of my character creations
But I have no idea who would want them?!
Am I looking in the wrong places? if so could you beauties folk throw some recommendations my way?
Thanking in advance

I think the term "neo" or "new" burlesque is the term given to the recent revival of the art - the revival for which the MoB is the bustling hub.
It also applies, as is my understanding, to the subsequent updating or modernising of the traditional form. Although still rooted in traditional striptease etc. as with everything you have to adapt to an ever changing audience. And of course Burlesque is a satircal artform and to be satirical you also need to be topical therefore perhaps doing an act that sends up, oh off the top of my head, Margaret Thatcher (although I think you'd be hard pressed to make that sexy *shudder*) would fall into the "neo" burlesque category.
I really like the sound of all your acts, they sound fun and it's important to come up with quirky ideas that keep things fresh. You should talk to Wild Card Kitty, she is a very talented performer who is very good at coming up with acts that have eccentric and contemporary twists that are in the vein of neo-burlesque.
Just put the ideas out there to all the usual clubs and events, promoters often like to have a mix of styles within their line-up.
Hope that's useful, all the best!

They're all great ideas which I'm sure can be built upon. I'm no expert in choreography OR drama (being a drama queen is a whole other thing of course ) but I think they are very alternative to the Burlesque that I have come to know and love. I'm sure there are a lot of visionary Burlesquers out there who would want to try something new though. In essence, I guess I'm a bit more American Burlesque- all strip and no storyline- BUT I'm still playing about with themes. I think if you can come up with a suitable costume idea, and proof of concept on these ideas, then showing them to a few Burlesquers might help you get some feedback on whether you're doing the thing for the business, or whether your skills would be better put to use else where in a different industry.
Good luck darling, and keep up all the hard work!

If my wifes experience as a newcomer of finding a stage to work on is anything to go by then you do have a tough time ahead of you. Be prepared to get lots of knock backs and to be ignored, but someone will offer you a stage to work.
As for a place to perform Neo-Burlesque - lots of events will put that style on their stage. If you're based in or near Birmingham then I may be able to offer you stage time in the future.

I think you should just go for it, might be scary to break new ground depending on where you perform it but as long as you have a strong act that you're confidant with put it out there. I don't really get the last post when you were saying about how they might be best suited somewhere other then burlesque because they sound pretty much like burlesque characters to me. It made me feel like there's certain rules where an act would fit into the box labelled burlesque or not and I feel about uncomfy about it like my ideas wouldnt fit in either.
Sweet Scarlet is not a glamour queen she is not sending up things going on in the word today, she is sending up me doing burlesque, if that makes sense. I want to perform my new fadance which is kind of fast and stroppy and doll like performed to the Dresden Dolls. And I'm worried that because I do it in stripy socks without pretty heels and my hair in a mess and I'm not doing a graceful fandance like we would all recognise its some how not going to fit in that box.
I think work on your acts until you are happy with them and test them out. Everyone has their own style. Really like the sound of Hobo Kitty, liking the name too.

When in doubt you can do what a friend of mine, Cherry Loco did by designing and putting on his own debut. He got some talented friends to perform, amongst them Vendetta Vain and Daiquiri Dusk and then he made his first ever stage debut at his birthday party. It was well attended and a lot of fun plus he was able to get good feedback from everyone. When no opportunities present themselves, find a way to make your own. xx

Hi honey
I think a lot of my acts are odd as I like twists and stories in my acts but I have a couple of pretty ones in there to just to mix it up. I have no problems getting bookings as a good promoter likes to put a mix of acts on if they were all the same then the night would be dull.
If you have a myspace get on there and start sending out mails to clubs asking to perform we have all done it. It takes time and effort but it pays off in the end as then people start to email you for bookings. You need a show reel on there to let people no you can perform and some images so they can see your look. If you have not done any events you will probably be offered stage time but no pay but this get you images for your site, possible a video of you performing and also improve your acts as doing them on stage is different from doing them at home.
Where are you based? there are normally nights in most cities now that you can try.
Good luck
Hugs

have been wondering whether to post on here about doing a newbie night and how hard it would be (well i have now havent I!) Just thought there are a lot of newbies it would be good to get together and do a one off debut night like a debutantes ball of burlesque performers but then I think it would be way too much for my brain to organise and I put teh idea away again.

Ah I'm sorry darling, I thought you meant you were choreographing, and not the performer yourself! Well, of course, if you're performing your acts show a few clubs it and see what happens! There will be a place where your acts fit in, you just have to find it! You might be asked to tone it down, or something, but I cannot imagine anyone would ask you to change your act altogether, work with clubs and if you get told 'no' then ask them why. The best way to know what people need is to ask them of course! A very big good luck to you doll! xx
