You'll excuse me for being a little slow on the uptake.
I can't really can't express how good it is for a newbie to do this. Not only does it give the oppertunity to observe how more long-running performers shake a tassel, conduct themselves backstage and network; it also gave me a great boost of confidence to be in a friendly enviroment (being a birthday bash, I was surrounded by friends & family) where any flaws in my routine could be laughed off and remembered for later.
If that's not possible, I would just say be tenacious but polite with your contacts and network your butt off, toots. Personally, I also thought my shtick was going to be very awkward to fit in with most audiences (being an androgymous male performer) but I've been very pleasantly surprised over the short while I've been performing.
If it looks natural for you, I doubt anyone would question your act.
Best of luck.
