Roll up, roll up, roll up, for the maddest festival of music, mad stunts and comedy to hit Leeds. Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of Komedy Kollective, purveyors of satirical theatre and subversively twisted cabaret.
The pioneering pan-Northern catch-all funky-ass entertainment concept touches down at the recently refurbished grade one listed former church, the student-friendly Halo nightclub on Woodhouse Lane, Leeds, at 8pm-2am, Monday the First of October, 2007, at a venue with excellent acoustics and a high ceiling ideal for juggling acts. Fusing kick-ass music, comedy, poetry and stunts, this jam-packed club night refuels Leeds’s embryonic comedy scene.
Rather than creating a new evening of solely stand-up, Skewed Circus broadens the live comedy experience, catering for the widest possible tastes. A nightclub event like no other, stand up and sketch performances take their place alongside DJs and live bands playing such genres as house, techno, hip hop, electro, and peculiar cabaret music, with visual fireworks from fire-eaters, body modification sideshows, situation art, and all the fun of the fayre.
REGULAR PERFORMERS
Don’t get on the wrong side of Ringmaster Rainmac, the world’s first ever trainspotting circus ringmaster. With diesel-coated skeletons in his closet, be extra careful not to cross his tracks, his whip ready to be cracked, his notebook poised. Less daunting but no less entertaining, the Glitter Kittens international burlesque troupe who recently toured to Hollywood, Los Angeles, will also be making regular appearances in our Yorkshire and Manchester events.
Also headlining at every Skewed Circus event, having performed at the Big Chill, are Liverpool techno terrorists, Dogshow, armed with homemade synths and theatrical dancers, plus political poet Johnny Solstice, winner of Beat The Frog at the Frog and Bucket, stand-up James Harris, and Leeds’s answer to Bill Hicks – mirth marauder Robert Alexander
GUEST STARS
Besides the regular Skewed Circus regulars outlined above (who perform at all venues), specific performers for Leeds on October the first include: - celebrity daredevil stunt artist Joseph Peace, who appeared on Holly and Fearne Go Dating (Thursday the 6th September 2007, ITV1), and Britain’s Got Talent, famous for setting fire to his head to help find a new girlfriend. Urban dance frenzy is provided in the form of breakdancers from Bradford’s JSH Dance Academy, and Bradford-based grime crew Darks @ Crew. Unleashing the razzmatazz at Halo, Woodhouse Lane, Leeds, are distinctive DJs including DJFS (Mayday Entertainments), DJ Lady Love, and DJ Andy Turpin, interactive art from Black Dogs Collective, quirky “Booshesque” sketch comedy from Dog-Eared Collective (fresh from their Dickensian romp Barnaby Brown at the Pleasance Dome at the Edinburgh Fringe), dazzling synchronicity from Johnny The Juggler, and quirky local bands including ever-popular Madam Laycock And Her Dabeno Pleasures (Hyde Park Unity Day, Linus Twizzle, & Cloth Cat Studios benefit gigs).
