Question Non burly friends and their reaction to burlesque

Have you ever taken or dragged along any non-burly friends to a burlesque event and what was there reaction??????

I dragged a few friends with me to Pitty Patt recently and was surprised, to say the least by their reaction. Although they are generally broadminded they REALLY did not enjoy it. One even said that..."There must have been a lot of lesbians there as there were a lot of women cheering"!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So.........what reaction have YOU had from non-burly friends and have you been surprised by it????

kisses

Got to admit - I haven't told any. Not really out of a sense of shame or anything - more because I don't see my non-burly friends often enough for it to be a big issue. I never told my workmates because I wasn't sure how my bosses would react and I didn't want to end up being told I couldn't do it or anything silly like that. But to be fair, most of my 'burly friends' are now non-burly friends too.

That lesbian comment is rather silly - and amusing - though ...

Teeheehee still makes me laugh!

I can't really comment as not a great deal of them know about it. The ones that do understand it so it's all good

I've not really told anyone either Fleur. The friends I took to Pitty Patt thought it was just a one-off thing for me. No-one has any idea about my involvement in burlesque.....and I'm happy to keep it that way. Would like to have a nice fella to rope into it all with me though...........sigh!!!!!!!!

Default Mixed bag really

I've had whole groups of guys leave during my performances saying it's well gay, drunk non-burly homophobes-i'm totally straight too!!!-do sometimes wear nipple tassle and totally drag it up though-lol. But on the whole most of my actual friends have loved my shows/performances. My favourite was my sister, she visited for the first show she'd ever seen me in recently and and in drunken tears during the interval told me how proud she was of me! As far as work goes I go with the totally in your face approach telling everyone, putting posters up, I find being proud and being up front about it the best way and athough I get the odd comment from the manager, he and the rest of my collegues think it's cool. It's never gonna be cool with everyone though as it's totally subjective like any artform. I did once have a girl I was chatting up at a party laugh in my face and refuse to speak to me after i revealed i was a male burlesque dancer.......oh well her loss. ;0 XXXX

Her loss indeed babes. I have to be a bit careful as I work in a secondary school but my friends just don't seem to 'get' burlesque at al, which surprised me.

At the casino I told most people, I used to show bits of my dances in the safety of the cashdesk which always put a smile on customer faces.... now? Never! even though I'm attending tourcher garden with my new colleagues .... but I love the escapism mid-shift of burly day-dreams!!! xxx

Talking

When I told my friends I wanted to be a burlesque dancer they looked at me in disgust and were just really shocked, which kinda upset me... but not really. I dont care what people think as long as I enjoy what I am doing.

But when I took some other friends to see a Burlesque show (Cheesecake Night of the Living tease) They really enjoyed it and we all had so much fun we can't wait to go see another show again!

My friends know, I took my ex to some shows and more recently I took my friend Dan to Candybox which was... alright, I think he enjoyed it but more... looking at the gorgeous ladies where I love the performance aspect of it... don't get me wrong, I love looking at the ladies but that's not all it is to me.

He can be pretty outspoken to the point of being rude - talking to me when some of the performances were going on did not amuse.
I need some girly friends to go with xx

I've brought a few friends along to Burlesque events and whilst a few aren't exactly keen it was a more "not really my cup of tea" thing than "oh my god - there are scantily dressed women on stage" which is fair enough, everyone has their likes and dislikes.

I've also had a lot of friends who absolutely adore it though and love the shows so I must be doing something right when it comes to introducing people to the scene (although it is probably also down to the fabulous performers on the Scottish circuit as well)!

As far as work goes I tend to tread a middle path - I don't hide my burly side and most of my colleagues know that I've got my debut stage performance coming up (even if some of them aren't sure exactly what kind of dancing I do), but I don't go out of my way to advertise it either.

However that's more about keeping a barrier between my home life and my work life than anything else - I don't tend to discuss my home life in too much detail at work full stop and burlesque kind of falls into that (I realised that not that many people at work even know something as basic as the fact that I have dogs at home).
