Why?! If you'd said ' Personally I find faux lesbianism onstage very offensive' that would be cool - everyone is entitled to their opinion. But you can't say 'it's offensive fullstop that's the end of the matter' because that's just your personal view....not everyone's.
Why is two women pretending to kiss any worse than a man and a woman pretending to kiss....on stage, tv, in films, in pop videos?
Why is two women pretending to kiss any worse than male r&b performers hiring scantily clad women to fawn, snog or rub themselves up and down their legs?
To me there is no difference between drag kings kissing you as farce, gender play, etc. and Madonna/Christina/Britney or the Satanic Sluts kissing.......of course its gender play, of course its taking the mick, and of course it's teasing and a bit naughty...which is probably why they like doing it and many of us in audiences like watching it.
And why do you think they're pretending to kiss for MEN? Why can't they be doing it for all of us? Indeed.....why can't they be just doing it for themselves too, because they enjoy the tease? We hear plenty of other burlesque performers saying they perform primarily for themselves, why not the Satantic Sluts?
I see nothing wrong to two women pretending to kiss on stage. I'm a lesbian and a woman (der Tempest!) and I don't find it in the slightest bit offensive or degrading - I actually think these women are pretty empowered that they can get up on a stage and tease us so.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, so we can agree to differ on this one Heather - but just because you find something offensive, doesn't mean we all have to.

Wow. This is one rather philosophical thread!
It seems to come down to umbrella terms... for some, the term 'burlesque' ought to be more precise, for others, the term is there to be explored and debated.
As for my own opinion, I see 'burlesque' like the term 'pop music' - Britney Spears and Madonna make pop music... as do The Klaxons and The Arctic Monkeys... but I don't think for one second that anyone's going to neglect to see the nuances between the individual artists. As such, I have no grievance with the term 'burlesque' being used to identify a wide variety of performances. Audiences are intelligent and thoughtful most of the time...
However, when describing my own style I like to use many more adjectives and atmospheric wordings to summarise what I (Beatrix Von Bourbon) do on stage... I do 'burlesque', but also so much more around and in-between that term,

As one x brum performer called it lipstick lesbianism, errrrrm sorry no that's quite a different practice in the gay community.

I've always known this as lipstick lesbianism- I'm intrigued as to what your definiton is.
It also offends me. Any form of sexuality, be that homosexuality, heterosexuality, bisexuality, pansexuality etc, is important to an individual, and I feel this "look how hot we are, we're kissing each other, ooh we're so naughty, don't we just turn you on so much?" viewpoint is making a mockery of those sexualities.
Maybe it's just me but this is one of my huge pet hates.

I've tried to stay out of this thread for as long as possible, whats upsetting me is that if something similar had happened to someone on here-say me for example, would you have the same reaction???
I like to think you would have sympathy for me-having details of my private life splashed accross the news in such a way??? Admittedly, Brand is known for his promiscuity (I mean no slur on his character-just stating the facts) and I should know better etc... but surely what happened overrides whether the Satanic Sluts are considered burlesque or not??
Admittedly GB is posing on the front of Zoo but surely her telling her side of the story and getting some ££££ for being upset in such a way is an understandable reaction.
Personally-and this is only my opinion- I wouldnt consider the Satanic Sluts as burlesque but my heart goes out to GB

I hate to say it but this whole lark has just re-inforced my belief that talent doesn't account for much in the success stakes.
I firmly believe that Georgina will be doing Celebrity Reality TV come the end of 2009 and making far more money than a lot of the really talented performers on this forum who are working all the time.
You don't need talent, you just need to sleep with the right head, wait for the fallout, employ Max Clifford and whip your boobs out for Zoo magazine.
Oh, and being a relative of someone famous sure helps.

And every other publication that'll have her ... I feel she's not come out of this in the most dignified way - telling your side of the story is one thing, but by going on record in the Sun with what Brand's prowess was like and what he said in bed, she's lost any sympathy she might have had from me. She's doing what many would in her shoes and turning the whole situation to her financial advantage - which is all well and good, but surely it means people should stop referring to her as a victim?

I think she was dumped on in a most unpleasant way but has exploited this and will undoubtedly make a LOT of money out of it. While I don't really have any sympathy for her (though do for Andrew Sachs who was much more dumped on and handled it in a much more dignified way) I can't in all honesty say that I would begrudge her making the money out of it that she will undoubtedly do. I don't "read" zoo nuts or the rest of the low brow tabloid mags so I won't have to put up with the unseemly feeding frenzy so hey good luck to her but don't expect any sympathy for your "plight"!

(December- I would say a Lipstick Lesbian is just a Femme Lesbian ( i.e. that wears make-up) as opposed to a 'Butch' looking girl....just thought I'd add that...there may be other definitions I don't know of though!)

Ah, thank you It's strange how definitions can vary. Maybe it's a regional thing?
