I only mean over-sized so that people at the back of a pub can see them (and I think things that aren't quite the right size are funny...but that might just be me), I'm not going all Immodesty or Dita over-sized on you

I use a sign in my casino act so people know what's going on and don't just wodner why some bird is playing with cards ... use big bold letters, few words, decent spacing, and not too fancy a font. Black on white is easiest to read. Don't worry about the audience not bothering to read it, if you hold it up and make a big fuss of it (big surprised eyes, 'ooh, what is this?' face) they'll take notice. I think audiences read my sign ... ask the last SSSS attendees ^_^

You need to use a fairly simple typeface - don't go overboard on swirls because they're completely illegible, especially in clubs. The same if your boards are too shiny - if the light is too dim or hits it at the wrong angle nobody will be able to read it.

I'd try not to rely too much on boards, if you're not in the first few rows it can be difficult to see much, especially if you're far too short like I am It's a cute idea though, I hope it works out xx

Thanks Miserabelle. Talking about it all here has definitely crystallised my ideas and there's only going to be one thing with words on....BUT THANK YOU SO MUCH for mentioning the danger of something being shiny. You are so right and it hadn't even occurred to me. I was going to laminate my big poster to make it more durable, but you're totally right about it being a blur if the lights hit it at the wrong angle.

So glad I asked you lot!!

I know it's difficult without me talking you through the whole storyline, what music I'm using and how I plan to link in me removing clothing with it etc. I think I've sorted all this - but there's a big part of the act I need to clear with someone first before I can start seriously thinking about performing it.

I think with a lot of issues with props, signs etc, it can be difficult to guage what works until you have done the act a couple of times. In a lot of my acts i end up with signs or readable props but usually they are to reinforce the action... where you could probably trust that the audience would get what was going on but the label gives it a little insurance for the few who maybe didn't follow.
With regards to props, i think they are a great idea as long as they don't complicate the issue. If you need a prop then you need it, no two ways about it... having said that, i do find i have to stop myself from confusing things with more props than are needed!
