larger performers
I am a large lady (size 22) and am big busted to boot, most performers I have seen are small sized.... before I get heavily into burlesque instead of belly dance is there a market for larger performers? and where would I get nice costumes etc if I did not wish to show my tummy please?
thanks

Hi darling, welcome to the MOB forum. It may help you to make your choice between burlesque and belly dancing if you see other girls who, despite not conforming to the media nazis idea of being, 'The ideal shape,' still go on to forge a career in performing burlesque. But, whether or not, you can make any money, is another question entirely. Have a look at Dearie Delicious, and then see how you feel.

There are some really big stars in burlesque, in the truest sense of the word. And as for costumes, well, you will get plenty of advice from the forum's performers, rather than a little burlesque fan like me. Wish you well, whatever you decide.

Sweetheart, there are some damn fine Burlesquers out there who are larger than a 22! Take a look through the forums, ask as many questions as you like, we will all try to help you in anyway we can, On a dafter note, I am a CD, I am learning a Burlesque routine, I am short, fat and hairy with no boobs!! Even my soon to be wife Louise reckons I am going to have problems with me belly in a corset!
( This Wednesday coming folks!! And I am panicking coz not only am I the groom, I am part of the gig as well!! AND it is being filmed!!! )

Hi Andromada
I am a size 20/22 too (depending on shop ) and although not performing yet - I'm going to.
I heartily recommend getting 'heavily into burlesque' just because it will make you feel wonderful.
It's not to do with size with burlesque, it's truly how you work it. If you're a big lass with tons of confidence the audience will love you just as much a smaller-framed lass who has confidence. Confidence is sexy and what I've seen of burlesque audiences on the whole is that they want performers to succeed and are behind them with whoops, cheers etc. (you still get the odd bitchy comments from some nasty people in the audience whether you're big, small, short, tall, black, white, blonde, brunette, redhead, male, female etc - these are in the minority, but you do have to ask yourself whether you are confident in yourself to handle these small minded people).
So is there a market for larger performers? Yes, if you have sparkle, wit, confidence, sexy appeal, creativity.....and most of these will grow as you perform more too.
Here's some more inspiration for you, seeing as you say you've only seen small sized performers:

Dirty Martini's Spider Web routine

Of course you should get into burlesque!!! I mean, ive never seen a skinny girl perform come to think of it, well maybe a couple but they wernt too fun to watch really lol Just check out dirty martini, shes amazing. As long as you ooze confidence its only going to be your performance people watch!

Hello Andromada!
Welcome! I am a size 18 and, although I haven't yet performed, I am planning to soon. Myself and two girls I will be performing with had a photoshoot today - they are both smaller than me - and the photos looked great. I feel that burlesque is all about sass and confidence and have personally enjoyed the performances where someone looks like they are having fun, and those aren't necessarily the skinny performers. As Tempest says, Va Va Vunderbust and Dirty Martini are great.
And, Michelle, good luck Wednesday! I hope we get to see photos!
xx

well I have to say apart from Dita Von Tease (who was great) the only other ones I have seen were very disapointing ... there was nothing to them and they were boring to watch.....
Thanks for all the support.... it shows me that there is a place for me in Burlesque as I am.
I manage the confidence and sexiness in my belly dance so why not in this! now I just need costumes and practice and then we'll see

Nothing wrong with bigger girls performing - but nothing wrong with skinny girls either ...

agreed ... I was just worried that that was the only shape acceped as that was all I had seen and it is not me....
the main problem with them was not their size but that they were boring to watch they did not engage the audence at all, most people continued to eat or drink rather than enjoy the performance, while the 1950's style jazz singer had the same people captivated.....
