katsomaya, we honestly are only trying to help. When is the event for? I know a venue that depending on the charity the money is for is very willing to allow charity events room.
You might find that a lot of people are more willing to help donate times and services if you had a single charity (even if you stated 10% of the money will be going to a number of other charitys). The charity may well have a P.R department that has links/agreements with various agencies that can help with location/PR etc. They tend to be very helpful and can also provide confirmation to venues that it is indeed a charity event
Also when it comes to staffing then it may well be worth getting in touch with colleges/uni with media departments. Students will often be happy to donate services to gain experience and for their CVs.
I have helped organise charity events (although not for burlesque) and can only point out that places and people get a lot of people approaching them for help and its by providing details that will often be the cause of a no turning into a yes.

Seems to have cut out a bit in my above post - The p.r departments of charitys are very helpful, and as well as having media contacts, they often have contacts with venues and P.R companys that will donate services. As well as being able to confirm that the event is indeed for charity. They can also inform you on if something similar is occuring and can help promote it nationwide

I think that the others on here have made some good points.
I would say, if you aren't really sure how to get venues, protmotors etc to help you out and haven't really had much experience putting on a charity event before have a chat with some of the people who have (everyone on here is really friendly!), I know Angel LaVey and Gehenna attempted to do one and experienced a few pitfalls that I'm sure they could help you avoid, Charlotte Thompson put on a fabulous charity event in Nottingham that went very well indeed and raised a lot of money and I know there are others who also have experience in this area.
Talk to them, they are really nice! If you could find a way to get rid of the £250 issue you will probably find people are much more willing to pitch in, after all everyone loves a good cause.

Why thank you Emerald - Angel and I did indeed try to organise a Charity Fund Raising Burlesque show, and we experienced lots of problems hence the idea was canned and Silk Stocking Striptease Show was born.
If you want to run a charity event then you need to make clear who you are supporting - some performers would support one charity but not another.
As for charging £250 to appear - I wouldn't even pay the Ministry of Burlesque £250 to get my wife on their stage, and these guys have plenty of media coverage, why should I offer you even a fraction of that when you can't even put a bit of blurb on this forum that tells me who you are supporting and what parts of the media will be in attendance.
Someone has mentioned your offer looking like a scam, your response is to offer a suggestion that you could consider suing for libel. Whenever I see those words the first thing I imagine is that the libel threatener has lost control and needs to play internet power games to silence the doubters. I feel that if you can't offer a better reply than that then you look like a scammer, something you may not be at all, but threats on an internet forum never look good on the original poster.
I've seen some charity nights run in which performers have appeared for free, but very often the performers are either very new or are friends of the promoter/organiser. The shows are not stellar events with high tech equipment or attended by journalists from the mainstream press, they are generally quite small - I imagine that you guys have some grand ideas, but if you can't seriously fund them yourself and expect to make the costs back then you are dreaming. My own attempt to run a charity show was fairly simple but it had to be killed off because we could not afford the setup costs and sponsors were few and far between. I also experienced a lot of resistance from the charity I had chosen, in the end they took a month to turn us down flat on just using their logo.
I think the last thing I want to see is some relative newbie come on this forum in a month or two and ask if anyone has any contact details for Katsomaya, as they have given over £250 and received nothing. Don't let this happen.

Due to the amount of somewhat accromonious replies i will be pulling this thread monday it seems anumber of people think the world owes them a living and evrything costs nothing by asking an upfront fee to cover venue hire, marketing,pa systmes etc as few backs have obviously been put up regardless of the event being charitable if you can find companies willing to offer free venue hire,pa systems, markeing etc, good luck to you especially in todays economic climate
the message i suppose is honesty is not always the best policy words like "scam" are unwarranted, unwelcome and in writting, can be considered libel very dissapointed in the character assassination katsomayas been subjected to it reflects badly on the majority of wise minded, talented mobers out there.
our event will go regardless, a good number of people will benefit and it will be a success.
best wishes

Hi Katsomaya, I've moved the update you made yesterday on your first post to its own post so everything appears in chronological order. This makes it less confusing for people who are following this thread who might not have gone back to reread that the original post had been updated.

Okay, firstly you'll find that the only people who can 'pull a thread' are the moderators.
Secondly, I'm an equal part baffled and amused that you want to pull the thread because you think that 'a number of people think the world owes them a living'. Nobody on this thread has asked for any money whatsoever apart from you guys. You say that it's to cover costs - but you've apparently not got a venue or equipment (or indeed a charity) lined up, yet you already know that performers will have to pay £250 each for the privilige of performing in this incredulous circus of ambiguity.

There is absolutely nothing libellous whatsoever about people querying the event. To be considered libellous, you have to make an untrue claim against a person. To say that an event sounds like a scam is very different from calling somebody a scammer.
Even Gehenna has said 'if you can't offer a better reply than that then you look like a scammer, something you may not be at all'.
Do you not understand that people have got annoyed because of this sequence of events:
- You ask for £250 from performers for the privilige of performing in your event - something that is totally unprecidented.
- You then tell people that you are unwilling to answer anybodys questions on the forums and to contact you directly.
- You then get defensive and threaten to sue for libel when people ask some very valid questions.
Asking people to contact you privately due to 'time restraints' doesn't really fill anybody with confidence. If you have such time restraints that you can't spare the time to answer the questions that people have every right to ask, what chance do you have of finding the time to do everything you need to promote your event. Are you going to be too busy to deal with the press, or do you simply not have the time for the people that you want £250 from?!

If your event does go on regardless, I wish you all the luck in the world, but I can guarantee that you're not going to find any performers who will pay £250 to perform on your stage.
At the risk of being me getting sued for libel , you clearly don't know the business, don't seem to have any track record in promoting burlesque events and your over-aggressive replies and threats to peoples completely valid questions will ensure that performers and press will avoid this one like the plague.
Nobody will benefit from this event - not even your good selves.

I have to say that am with James on this one.
250 pounds!! I promote for club venues/events, I would ever ask a performer to pay to appear and we are well known. They would be giving there fee towards the charity, there time for free that in its self is a big ask for well known performers.
I dont really understand how you can be thinking stright, if you dont understand why people would think that being asked to pay 250 pounds just cos the event is for charity sounds like a bit of a scam???!!? And then to not even have a charity in place or a venue is just going to add fuel to the fire! I know lots of venues which would do a deal or free for a charity event, so am consered about your post. I mean someone hands over 250 (a lot of money, do you know how many shoes I could buy with that! lol) how do we know that it wont be canx last minute and you run off with the money? If its costing so much to hire a venue (keep cost down and hire somewhere which already has a pa and speakers etc!) why not just give the money to the charity, I mean I would not book a venue which would be taking money out of the total raised for the charity?? I just dont understand?
Oh and as for the whole sueing thing, did you know it costs at least 5000 pounds just to start sueing for libel?? if you have that kind of money to throw around why are you asking performers to pay to show at your event???
Ok saying all that if I have got this wrong please reply.

as long as you can get people to spend money at the bar, most places will give you the room for free. especially if its a weekday. lots of people give their time for free too if its charitable. you can always find someone who will help out and GIVE their time.
my friend is putting on a charity burlesque event at halloween. the venue is free, the performers are free, the pr is free, the local newspaper press is free. everybody working on this is GIVING their time and effort for free. including me.
hopefully a substansial amount should be raised without incurring any cost.

Woah. I just read this and I'm with all you guys- it sounds fishy.
How can they have time restraints stopping them from replying to a large group of people in one go on here, but have time to reply to each individual email seperately?
Oh and if they were to "pull the thread" why Monday? Why not straight away?
Looks like they have gone now- so they can't have been all that serious about it.
Never mind. All the best of luck to them with this.

I agree with others here to ask folks to pay for a stand at a tradefair or to show at a fashion show is standard practice that is business but not for an event do.
I am currently putting on a charity burlesque fashion show in leeds with the lovely cecilia rouge for a charity I run which is tiny and gets no funding. We put an article in the local paper and were given a fabulous venue, (we got offers of several more as well). A call to the local radio got us one of their presenters to host it
The venue has nothing in it so we have to bring everything, even loos, which costs, but have found people very kind, someone is building us a fab website and helping us with pr, the models are all doing it for free with weeks of rehearsals taking up their time, designers are giving for free, as are backstage crew, we've been offered chairs and tables, hairdressers and make up as part of a sponsorship package, lots of lovely raffle prizes, and perfomers for before and after the fashion show.
If they can't do it for free the companies are cutting costs and they will be paid out of ticket fees. There won't be much money made for the charity at the end of it but there never is as events cost so much to put on but we wouldnt' dream of asking folks to pay for the privilege of being involved, and the publicity it will generate is worth it to everyone involved. So jsut ask around for freebies but you do need to get your charity sorted first so it touches a chord with whoever you are asking, feel free to do it for us, it is the 3rd most fatal illness in the western world and affects 1 in 4 people but hardly gets any publicity or funding at all
I notice you also put on burlesque fashion shows but don't worry we haven't nicked your idea and hope you won't pinch any of ours
