Deliberately choose different music or approach the theme from another angle and it'll be fine. If you're worried you'll step on someone's toes, send them a quick message and ask. I've had to change routines a fair few times because other people used similar ideas, but it always worked out well in the end because it allowed me to come up with my own angle. I think it's horrid when someone uses someone blatenly copies another performers act. I know that there will possibly always be some form of crossover in certain acts.
I know I have thought of acts before and then realised that someone does something really similar and have just scrapped the idea.
I hope this performer is ashamed of themselves for this.

Probably not, whenever I've encountered copy cats most of the time they don't even realise they are doing it. When I confronted my little doppleganger she burst into tears ... she didn't know you should have your own act.... brains huh?
The people who need to know about this performer and their ilk already know, they can speak for themselves. In addition this person simply won't get far without originality so don't worry about it. Forget them and rise above it.

really good point. It might get them noticed, but for all the WRONG reasons.
It will be them who it will damage in the long run

As has been said, whatever routine you may come up with someone else will probably have already done it or something similar - the important distincion is that you personalse the act a lot - make it your routine, so even if it's two secretary routines the acts are very different bar the core concept.
If you have never seen an act before and you have created one similar then fair enough, I'm sure it happens. And most performers acts evolve with time so even if acts are similar they will eventually change. My issue here is that someone has seen an act of Delilah Dufoe's and just copied it to an extent that is unreasonable.
The call for a database of acts would prove fairly useless unless it was exhaustively detailed, and as acts change even after being performed the maintenance would be horrific.
Newbies, please do not give up or get scared. Take what you have and work with your best technical assets, skills and personal style.

Sadly their are times when the copycat in question knows exactly what they are doing. I have had my Britney act stollen before even down to the X Factor Simon Cowell bit. Which to be honest is just stupid as I'm very well known for that routine as well as my transformation piece, balloon pop ect. The blurb about this act has since disappeared from said persons page. I can only assume someone who knows me and that act chewed her out about it.
The reason for this is I've always been as orginal as possible with my acts and put my own twists on them - which gets you noticed and gets people talking - definately the way to go. I will freely admit I can not guarentee that my acts are free from cross over comparisons but I've always researched my routines as best I can. If I were to find too many comparisons I would change things.
Newbies please don't get paranoid. We are all lovely people on here and are more than happy to give advice and support about your acts if you are worried. Just remember most concepts are already out there but the chances of someone doing the exact routine with the exact costume, music, dance moves and story line are minimal.
Unless as with this SHAMELESS person you make it your business to go from show to show copying and pasting acts. For this reason myself and Gehenna are considering banning said performer from all future Silk stockng Striptease Shows in order to protect our performers from plagarism

when the issue of a database came up on when of the american burlesque forums, it was suggested to go straight to the copyright department of your government. If you can afford to patent your act like Dita then thats a great idea but for the average skint performer I don't really think it's a solution.
However, getting some good form of online/offline proof that you did this act first is great protection; i.e. photos from an event or references.

As most of you are aware, I am in the middle of quite a large exhibition... lots of planning, preperation etc as well as shoots with each performer, media/public relations work taking place.
On the evening of the launch, I will be looking for performers to put on a show...
I DO NOT want this person to be featured in my exhibition and receive any media attention as a result of my hard work.
Would someone be so kind as to PM me with the name of this person so I can make sure I do not involve them in my work.
Thanks in advance,
Deb

I think that secretary, librarian, waitress, frenchmaid type acts are quite cliched - as they conjour up stereotypical roles - but that said, isn't sending up stereotypes what burlesque is all about? Soooo, despite using these 'characters' you could be really innovative in how you put the act together, the twists, the turns and the revelations - and that is where the originality comes forth....
