Oh, hun!

As Dani said, if you ever need a chat feel free to PM me.

I didn't know my mum knew, until she said to me one day "There was a thing on This Morning about burlesque. I recorded it for you". She's on my Facebook, and that mentions it. When I first got into burlesque I had a thing about Dita so that was a hint. And I've always, as long as I can remember, been into vintage. She is aswell, come to think of it. So it's not really a surprise. She's cool with it but I don't know how she would react to me performing.

I don't really speak to my Dad after a big row a year and a half ago so he doesn't know.

My Grandma, the other member of my family I'm really close to, has a watered down idea of it. I tell her I'm into vintage things and "vintage dancing" as I called it. I said it was like dance and theatre from past times. Seeing as she was born in 1935, she probably knows what I mean. She is generally ok with anything I do, within reason, as she understands what it is like to be my age. One grandmother lectures me on my piercings every time I see her; This one accepts that they won't be there forever and that they don't change the person I am.

So yeah. I'm not especially close to many members of my family so don't have many to worry about. The other two are my brothers. One is nearly 19 so he knows and is cool. The other is 8 so he will know eventually.

Hope you are ok Amethyst. I really hope you don't have to stay away from MoB

Surprisingly yes, because I thought they wouldn't be. My parents have turned out to be very supportive and have been known to bring friends to my shows! And as people who've been on this forum a while will know, I was terrified about telling them because I thought my mother would disapprove - she'd heard of Dita but when I told her she was essentially a stripper she made her 'unimpressed face'. So I wasn't looking forward to that - but it turned out she was completely unsurprised! My siblings don't seem to care one way or another - apparently they have expressed interest and support but rarely talk to me about it. And I am lucky to have one of the most supportive partners going (and no I'm not just saying that because he'd be upset if I didn't!). So I guess I'm in a lucky situation. But one thing that my dad said to me stuck out; my OH had joked that all parents see their kiddies as kiddies even when they're grown up, so my dad would think it was really weird that his 'little girl' was stripping - and he said 'god no, I don't go in for all that s**t; you're an adult, you can do whatever you want!' So remember that Amethyst - as an adult, you're free to do whatever you want as long as it makes you happy and doesn't hurt anyone.

I am very lucky to have a liberal and open minded Mum who likes burlesque too. She would like to give it a go, I keep encouraging her but she has my baby sister to look after.

she divorced my step dad 2 years ago and I don't see him that often, but he is the same as her in terms of being open minded and letting us get on with our lives so he wouldn't mind it.

My Nan isn't bothered/upset by it though I don't think she truly understands what it involves. Grandad doesn't know, he's the only person who might mind but I live my own life and I'm of an age where I'm not really accountable to anyone other than myself so I would never feel the need to justify myself in terms of my love for burlesque.

The only people who get to me are the ones I meet who have no concept of what burly is and automatically assume it's sordid or slutty I don't mind talking to people about it though, at least that way they will have a more informed opinion of it!

that's the main route of people getting upset about Burly I think: misunderstanding.

Take a peek at this thread, too: http://www.ministryofburlesque.com/b...alter-ego.html

Perhaps you should chat with your Mum before her and your Dad stew in an ill-informed, all-worrying burlesque soup. Emphasise its theatrical routes and its common misconceptions (i.e. men attend burlesque shows to perv at women - male/female audience ratios seem to disprove this).

Damage limitation!! xx
