BEATRIX HAS NEVER SEEN ROCKY HORROR! OH-EM-GEEEE!
Imma tie her up and make her watch it. She won't be able to moderate for a while, so behave yourselves.

I poste earlier in the thread that Beatrix would make an ace female frank, but the thread didn't like my suggestion and cut it out of my post!
You let her out of her bonds yet? hehe

And generally remakes are a bit rubbish and I'd rather they left good things alone too. But all copies of the original won't suddenly disappear and original fans won't suffer brainwipe and forget all about it! The Singalonga issue posed a 'danger' to the film as they were going to have exclusive rights to the prints of the film - therefore if you were to see Rocky in the cinema it would have to be the Singalonga version. That's no good because aside from whole issue of Singalong entirely missing the point of audience participation at Rocky, it just took out the element of choice.
But this remake is unlikely to render the original obsolete (especially as it's being premiered on Sky - we're talking 'made for TV' here!).
If I may be so blunt, I find the idea of a petition against it absolutely ridiculous! Sorry if anyone here has signed it, I don't mean to be, well mean! But really... A petition against people re-making a film just because you like the original. I was on board with the whole "don't remake it, that'll be rubbish!" thing until someone sent me a message asking me to sign the petition...
Mind you, there's over 6000 people who disagree with me!
|
The only good thing about petitions like this is when they get so big that the press notice, and it becomes a news item of its own - there's now over 10,000 "signatures" so maybe a few thousand more and it would become newsworthy. But I don't think it will stop the remake getting made.
Personally, my feeling on this is that - in theory - I'd be really interested to see a GOOD remake, if (for example) it used an interesting cast and a brilliant creative team (such as the one behind the recent David Bedella tour). A cast of talented unknowns, or a cast of surprise famous faces could be amazing. In a "what if?" situation it's quite exciting to think of all the great things someone could do with a Rocky remake.
However.... I doubt we'll get this from MTV. I'm imagining an EMO tinged High School Musical type thing. I think it will be dreadful. I don't even want to think about what they might do with the soundtrack...
How it will affect "proper" Rocky Horror Picture Show screenings I don't know. It could appear, be crap and sink without trace. Or it could be the final nail in the coffin. But I suppose at least it would give us something else to take the piss out of! I'm reimagining audience participation lines already.... And it's never likely to be screened in the cinema. So fingers crossed that it's so bad, it's laughable.
In any case, at least by signing the petition, I am claiming my right to turn round in 2010 and say "See? I told you so!"
Another interesting sub-story on this... there is now "A Rumour" that "Russell Brand is rumoured to play Frank" although I think this is simply because someone at The Guardian suggested it ( Will MTV prove to be a Rocky butcher? | Film | guardian.co.uk) and a London free paper picked it up, took it and ran with it. And so The Rumour Mill starts...

There's been talk of a Barbarella remake for years too... I actually think Rose McGowan is quite a good choice! Drew Barrymore was keen for a long time. Last I heard of it the plan was to make a bit more 'further adventures of Barbarella', rather than a straight re-make of the film.
Which I think could work - it is based on a comic book, after all. But to just remake the original film probably wouldn't work simply because... well it's not really very good (which is why it's so great!). Its appeal lies in it being a kitsch piece of 60s cinema - especially with its cameos from well known figures of the time.
I'd be interested to see a Barbarella series though, if done well. I'd REALLY have been interested to see the Barbarella musical from a few years back, though!!

When I went to see the show at the Bournemouth BIC some years ago, there were some there who walked out saying it was crap..............I did, however, manage to give the taxi driver who came to pick me up the shock of his life when this five foot seven bloke in a corsette, 6 inch heels, fishnets, all the makeup and the hair appeared at the door!!!! I personally think the show is great.
My other half, the wonderful Louise, has a minor claim to fame type thing with the show................She was the one in her audience who stamped on the note Eddie throws to the audience and would not move her self from that spot as every bugger around her tried to find it!! She does take it out now and then and simpers over it.................Sigh. And just to maybe hack some of you of, she also went to see "The Damned" on the 3rd June 1988, the day before her birthday, and got to go back stage to meet the band, when she got there and they found out it was her 18th the next day, Rat gave her his studded belt he wore for the tour, talk about not letting anyone touch the bloody thing! I have no major or minor claims to fame really.................Well, a couple but............

Id like to thank you Fleur for thinking of me as the Narrotor though I do not think anyone could top Mr Charles Gray in that role!
